Job Description:
The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (ISU CVM) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL). The primary focus of this position is to conduct research through application of computational and bioinformatic skills and techniques to virus and bacteria sequence data in preparation for a full-time independent career in academia or research. This position will work primarily in the ISU VDL and will require the use of bioinformatics skills to provide oversight to the ISU FLUture website (an internally developed resource that demonstrates influenza A virus (IAV) sequence data through an interactive, public format) and implement timely and relevant updates and new interactive computational tools. In addition, the successful candidate will acquire additional skills while conducting bioinformatic analysis for stakeholders of the ISU VDL using client sequences for influenza, PRRSV, PCV2 and other viruses or bacteria from production animals. Further advancing the benefits to stakeholders, bioinformatic data in the form of alignments, phylogenetics, nucleotide/amino acid comparisons, and structural proteomics will be provided for use in important management decisions and vaccine development. The postdoc will be able to analyze ISU VDL sequences using phylogenetic analysis and bioinformatic tools to characterize current trends in virus evolution that would be applicable for publication.

The person in this position will gain experience applying bioinformatics and computational biology analysis through applied research experiences, while working with stakeholders of the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The person selected for this position will be formally and informally trained in the latest tools and techniques in applied research processes and approaches specific to viruses or bacteria that impact production animals to support veterinarians and producers in the United States.

This is a full-time, two-year opportunity in the ISU VDL.
