Job Description:
The Computer Science Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for one full-time, Postdoctoral Research Associate to start on June 1, 2017.

This is a one-year appointment with a possibility of renewal based on productivity and performance and the availability of funding.

We seek a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research in the areas of computational linguistics and machine learning. The postdoctoral researcher will join the Text Machine Language for Natural Language Processing at UMass Lowell's Computer Science Department and work directly under the supervision of Professor Anna Rumshisky. The Text Machine Lab is currently being supported by over 1.4M external/federal research grants from NSF, NIH, ARO, and the industry. The postdoctoral researcher will also have plenty of opportunities to collaborate with other high profile computer science and biomedical researchers in the Boston Metro areas, including MIT, Dartmouth College. Boston University, Brandeis University, and others.

The postdoc will be able to contribute to several research projects in the areas of text-based temporal reasoning, computational analysis of civil conflict and informational biases in social media, and predictive modeling of patient outcomes and disease trajectories using clinical text from the electronic health records.

Responsibilities will include assisting the team with the scientific, technical, and logistic direction of the project and contributing to the overall project implementation and administration. Specifically, the postdoc is expected to contribute to algorithm development and implementation, setting up and managing data annotation for the projects, as appropriate, preparation of technical reports and manuscripts for publication, presenting papers at scientific conferences, and the weekly supervision of undergraduate and graduate students on the team. The computer Science faculty has received approximately $9M in the last two years in external research funding from the NSF, DARPA, DOD, DHE, NIH, and corporations.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

-Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field with a focus in natural language processing or machine learning

-Minimum 5-year experience conducting research in computational linguistics

-Substantial experience conducting linguistic annotation projects

-The ability to work effectively with diverse groups

-Must have earned doctorate at the time of appointment

-Must be willing and able to travel
