Job Description:
GRAIL, Inc., is developing differentiated platforms for the early detection of cancer. These platforms combine approaches to ultradeep sequencing of circulating, cell-free nucleic acids with innovative clinical programs of the scale and quality required to generate strong scientific and clinical evidence of their utility. GRAIL’s software and computational biology efforts are commensurate to the size and complexity of the resulting data sets. We are seeking passionate and talented individuals to join us in realizing our mission, which has the potential to dramatically reduce the global burden of cancer.

You will join a team at the forefront of modern cancer biology and set the company’s research directions in immunology, principally focused on cancer. Working with external data, collaborators, and GRAIL’s own data sets, you will formulate scientific programs that address the molecular transformations that give rise to malignancy and the measurable signals which are correlated to them. Your efforts will lead us to understand the mechanisms of immunosurveillance and the immune response as they are relevant to our research programs and development efforts. You will also formulate and lead collaborations with academic and industrial partners, including those concerned with cancer immunotherapy. Finally, you will represent our immunology research efforts outside the company.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Contribute to GRAIL’s deep bench of knowledge in cancer genomics and cancer biology, focused on the immune system and its role in all stages of cancer.

-Develop experimental and computational programs addressing fundamental questions in GRAIL’s product development efforts, including sensitive and specific signatures and correlates of malignancy.

-Develop innovative research programs which address more long-term and mechanistic questions using GRAIL’s data, particularly in cancer immunology.

-Collaborate with GRAIL’s other teams, including our clinical, R&D, and machine learning teams, to produce unique analytical tools and approaches and act as an evangelist for their use.

-Act to preserve scientific rigor and quality.

-Mentor scientists in the intersection of their speciality with immunology.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND:

-M.D./Ph.D. or Ph.D. in Immunology, Cellular Biology, Bioinformatics, Biological Sciences, Cancer Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Computer Science, or related field with a research focus on immunology.

-A strong record of contributions to the research community as evidenced by publications, impactful tools or data sets, and presentations.

-Established reputation as a leader in the field.

-Minimum of 8 years post-graduate experience in positions of increasing responsibility.

-History of success working in cross-functional environments.

-Familiarity with experimental or computational tools in immunology and functional immunology, including high dimensionality cytometry, repertoire profiling, etc. and their applications to cancer biology.

-Demonstrated ability to apply these skills to uncover new biological insights.

PREFERRED BACKGROUND:

-5 years of industry experience preferred.

-Understanding of modern tools for processing and analysis of primary immunological data, including immunogenomics and cytometry, and approaches to validate insights from these data.

-An understanding of experimental limitations of next generation sequencing experiments as applied broadly in cancer.

-Excellent statistical understanding of the underlying limitations of analytical approaches.

-Excellent oral and written communication skills.
