Job Description:
Make an Impact on Food Security as a Software Product Manager for a Leading International Non-Profit

Product Manager, Breeding Software

CIMMYT is looking for a software developer with experience in information management systems for large-scale integrated breeding and trait/gene discovery programs. He or she will lead efforts in developing an enterprise-wide system useful for all partner institutes around the world as well as national plant breeding programs. This is the perfect time to join CIMMYT, as the Excellence In Breeding platform has just launched this year. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation proposed this breeding platform in late 2016, which includes a significant emphasis on informatics (www.excellenceinbreeding.org). Essential to this effort will be software development for breeders who will use these tools to optimize their processes, ensuring that crop development programs are as effective as possible in reaching their potential for genetic gains. Improving genetic gains translates to a more rapid delivery of more nutritious and healthy crops for small farmers in resource-poor areas of the world.

Specific duties:

- Collaborate with breeders and research managers engaged in molecular and field-based breeding to understand the software users’ requirements and experiences both from the individual user and enterprise perspective;

- Build relationships with software developers across the plant breeding world, in order to acquire the best of all available technology for deployment in this integrated solution;

- Define informatics gaps, and evaluate tools which may fit gaps, as well as define any improvement needs for tools, establishing priorities for their improvement, and defining needs for novel tool development;

- Work with the wider community of partner center breeders and associated staff working in bioinformatics, biometrics, and data management to create product roadmaps for individual applications and for an overall breeding informatics toolbox;

- Document linkages and gaps within and between applications;

- Recommend and manage investments in the area of enterprise tool development:

- Develop and monitor implementation of project plans, working with providers to define and monitor these projects and components;

- Communicate project status to all stakeholders;

- Organize effective user testing and feedback, ensuring that all change, configuration, and release management procedures are followed;

- Support migration to and adoption of the new system by CIMMYT staff, partner centers and national agricultural research systems in the developing world.

Required academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:

- Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Computer Sciences or related field with project leadership experience

- Minimum of 3-5 years’ of work in breeding or plant sciences

As well as a strong track record of:

- Developing enterprise level breeding informatics tools

- Software product development and modification management

- Agile software development methods

- Planning and managements of sprints

- Familiarity with breeding processes, related terminology, and basic features of genealogical, phenotypic, and genotypic data

- Proficiency in English, with good written and oral communication and presentation skills

- High level of cultural sensitivity and ability to work in multicultural teams

- Willingness to travel to research centers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America

- Formal certification in project management would be desirable

Additional Info:
As a software development professional, you are constantly hearing about this opportunity or the next one. You receive a barrage of recruiter calls, allowing you to pick which company you might consider going to next if you’re in the market for a job change. The problem is that many of those positions are essentially doing exactly what you do now, but in a different location.

That’s why you should read further, because this is a job where you, as a software specialist, could actually have a major impact on a global problem – the issue of food security for a planet that will soon have over 9 Billion inhabitants. This is an entirely different kind of role than working for a company that is in the business of making a profit.

CTI Executive Search has been retained to identify candidates for an important software leadership position at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT, Mexico). CIMMYT is a not-for-profit research organization with a very large global plant breeding program (www.cimmyt.org), working with partners in over 100 countries. By providing specialized crop varieties such as drought tolerant or insect resistant Maize and Wheat to under-resourced peoples, CIMMYT helps realize their founding mission by impacting these low and middle-income countries with improved food and nutrition security, as well as helping them adapt for future climate change by providing improved varieties and agronomic practices.

The Product Manager for Breeding Software at CIMMYT will have a very direct and substantial role in the impact that CIMMYT makes on these global challenges, by leading the development and roll out of integrated software programs that will help CIMMYT and partner plant breeders move quickly and more efficiently towards these worthy goals. The position will be based at CIMMYT’s Main Campus in Texcoco (located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, Mexico), but will interact with other CIMMYT offices around the world on a regular basis. This is a global role, with daily interaction across many different world cultures and technical disciplines.

If you are interested in this role or can provide suggested contacts for CTI on this search, please contact us in confidence. Our search is not confidential and this document may be redistributed.
