Job Description:

In the Group of Science, Technology and Engineering, is a full-time academic vacancy at the Division of Crop Biotechnics, Department of Biosystems of KU Leuven, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, in the field of Plant-Health and Plant-Protection. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with a dynamic and motivated personality with an excellent research record and teaching competence in the area of the Plant-Health and Plant-Protection.

26 2001 Plant Health and Plant Protection

The Department of Biosystems can build upon a solid research infrastructure, an extensive international network, connections with companies and non-profit organisations, a stable offer of talented PhD students and a supportive work environment.

The department provides education support for a significant part of the Bioscience Engineering direction 'Biosystems', "Agriculture" and "Cell and Gene Technology" training.

Duties Research

You perform multi-disciplinary and internationally oriented research with a focus on plant health and plant protection. You publish at the highest scientific level, acquire resources for basic/applied research, build international cooperation and supervise PhDs at an international level. In this, the molecular genetic aspects of plant growth and plant development are linked to plant resistance and tolerance while addressing the underlying mechanisms in systems biology. We expect your research to focus on plant pests recognition and interaction. This research aims at gaining insights into the sensitivity of crops for their invaders. You need to integrate your future research in ongoing investigation within the division of Plant Biotechnics, within the department and within the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering. The ultimate research goal is to acquire knowledge that can lead to more sustainable agricultural production with fewer external inputs. Your research also provides support to increase the efficiency of plant breeding through targeted knowledge of plant health and plant protection. You pay the necessary attention to the valorisation of government and industry in applied research.

Teaching

You Ensure high quality education in the field of Plant-health and Plant-protection and in other areas that are in line with your expertise. This will mainly be done within the programs of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, such as "Plant diseases and Plant pests"   and  "Integrated pest management". The scope of this is limited to 12 credits in the first years of your appointment.  In your further career the faculty pays great deal of attention to the balance between research and teaching time.  Your teaching meets the demands of academic programswith respect to the scientific and academic level. Your teaching is also in line with the overall educational concept of the university. Commitment to a qualitative interpretation of the educational provision as a whole is obvious.  You also contribute to the educational project of the faculty through the guidance of master's theses and as supervisor of doctoral students.

Service

You are expected to support the general operation of the Department of Biosystems and the division of Plant Biotechnics. Scientific, social and internal services are also part of your job. It is also important that your research assesses the needs from agricultural production and the food chain in a broad sense, and especially that there is a good interaction with relevant internal and external research and research centers for the conversion of scientific knowledge into practical applications.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Requirements

You have a PhD in Bioscience engineering or a similarly related degree. You have proven to possess research and knowledge transfer capabilities, allowing you to strengthen the research output of the department and division, as well as the education at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering. Your research potential and quality must be evidenced by publications in leading/international journals. International research experience is required. A background in plant health or plant protection is highly recommended. Experience in field trials or greenhouse research is a plus. You will conduct your research plan in consultation with the division of Plant Biotechnics and other units within the department. It is expected that you start to establish multidisciplinary collaborations within the Science and Technology Group of the KU Leuven, and if possible with relevant actors outside the university. Moreover, it is expected that the research focuses on fruit crops, which are defined as a priority in the division of Plant Biotechnics. Knowledge to solve practical problems relevant in cooperation with the Flemish Extension service centers is an important issue. You are able to obtain competitive financing. You show leadership qualities and an attitude of cooperation and interdisciplinarity. Your education and research is complementary to what exists at the Department of Biosystems and faculty of Bioscience engineering. You have demonstrable skills for academic education. Teaching experience is a plus. You will be expected to take initiatives in the field of education within the field of plant health and plant protection, such as to enhance the appeal of this domain.

The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings.
