At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Program Manager and Principal Scientist of Analytical Chemistry to join and lead our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA
Under the direction of the Basic Algal Biology Research Program (BABRP) Senior Director, and with input from team leads, the Program Manager has overall responsibility for deliverables, work plans, timelines and reports. The Program Manager monitors budget, spend and revenue for the program. The Program Manager plays a key role in communication between the program teams, executive management and external partners. Working with the Sr. Director, the Program Manager develops and implements adjustments to research approach and resourcing to best ensure the team achieves its annual and long-range goals. Working with lead scientists, the Program Manager identifies potential technical collaborators and consultants to engage in the program.
The successful candidate also leads the Analytical Chemistry team to effectively support projects through development and delivery of required standard analytical services. Directs the activities of the members of the analytical chemistry team based upon input from service customers to establish deliverables and provide timely high quality results. Maintains a culture of safety and compliance with SGI policies.
Required Skills
• Demonstrated record of successful, complex program execution in fast-paced environment involving cross-functional and/or multi-disciplinary and/or multiple-site technical groups, preferably in advanced R&D programs.
• Demonstrated proficiency operating productive industrial collaborative relationships/ programs.
• Experience and demonstrated excellence at the bench conducting research and development in a team and structured program environment involving timelines and milestones.
• Formal training in professional program management in a biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical industry setting. Knowledge, training and a high level of proficiency with advanced program management techniques, methods and tools.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Superior oral and written communication skills; able to effective communicate with internal research and management audiences, as well as strategic partners.
• Excellent interpersonal, group-interaction, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage, mentor and develop an Analytical group in a fast-changing scientific environment
• Develops and continually improves high-throughput methods for metabolomics,lipidomics, and flux characterization of diverse single-cell organisms
• Leads development, validation and implementation of analytical methods using novel isolation chemistry with analytical instrumentation including GC/FID, GC/MS, HPLC/UV, HPLC/(accurate mass)MS and MS/MS both for identification and quantitation of compounds
• Foundational and applied bench R&D experience utilizing bioinformatics, molecular genetics and/or cell engineering.
• Work in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
Required Experience
• Requires a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or other relevant subject with a minimum of 10 years post-degree experience in analytical chemistry in an industrial setting
• A diverse knowledge of modern biochemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and analytical chemistry
• A track record of productivity with peer-reviewed publications and patent portfolio
• Prior experience managing reporting personnel in a research or industry setting
• Have demonstrated state-of-the-art technical capabilities particularly with chromatographic separations (LC&GC), quantitative MRM MS, accurate-mass MS, MSn, modern extraction techniques, small-scale purification strategies, NMR, and FTIR
• Experience with analysis of complex analytes in difficult matrices in food, fuels and nutritional products (e.g. lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, natural products)
• Experience with modern data acquisition and analysis software with chemometrics and statistics. Hands-on experience with Agilent software is highly desirable
• Able to work independently and flexibly adapt to changing priorities in interdisciplinary teams
• Consistently demonstrate initiative in implementing new projects with necessary staffing
• Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and have strong oral and written communication abilities
• Critical thinking and proven problem-solving skills
• Effectively establishes priorities amongst competing project requests and anticipates trends which may change staffing or equipment requirements
• Experience working with external contractors, such as partner industrial companies or external laboratories involved in chemical analysis
