Job Description:
We are one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of prions and their wider relevance to neurodegenerative disease ( www.prion.ucl.ac.uk ), and are seeking to recruit a Bioinformatics Research Assistant/Associate working with the Human Genetics Group, led by Professor Simon Mead (see: www.prion.ucl.ac.uk/4-yr-phd-programme/senior-scientific-staff/simon-mead/ ).

Utilising GWAS and NGS methodologies the Human Genetics Group investigates the underlying genetics and epigenetics of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), which encompasses distinct phenotypes such as variant CJD (vCJD), caused by human transmission of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) and sporadic CJD, which develops spontaneously in people.

The project will heavily utilize genome-wide approaches that involve next generation sequencing technologies, high dimensional data acquisition, data integration and computational analysis. We will collaborate with other research groups within UCL.

This post is funded for 2 years in the first instance.

Key requirements:

The successful candidate should have a strong research background in computational biology and ideally possess expertise in genomics, preferably with a PhD in Computational Biology and/or a subject related to biological sciences (with extensive computational knowledge) or must have a BSc degree (first class honours) in the above mentioned subjects (a PhD is essential for appointment on Grade 7). He/she should have previous experience of working with next generation DNA and RNA sequencing data and in common bioinformatics packages such as bedtools, samtools or GATK. The postholder will have extensive knowledge of a scripting language (e.g. Perl/Python), R/Bioconductor and Unix. The knowledge of statistics and mathematics applicable to genomics and machine learning data analysis is highly desirable. The enthusiastic candidate should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, work well within an interdisciplinary team and is expected to be able to design, execute, troubleshoot and interpret experiments. The candidate will also be given the opportunity to do wet work with the emphasis on computational work.
