Job Description:
Applications are invited for a vacancy in bioinformatics at either pre-doctoral or post-doctoral level. The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary team studying virus comparative genomics, gene expression, evolution, taxonomy, RNA structure and function, and virus discovery. The position will be based in the laboratory of Dr Andrew Firth in the University of Cambridge at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Further information about the lab's research may be found at www.firthlab.path.cam.ac.uk. Applicants should have a good degree in bioinformatics or molecular biology, virology or related disciplines or equivalent experience . Where the successful applicant does not yet have a PhD, they will normally be under-appointed as a Research Assistant (salary of £28,936) in a Research Associate post (on the understanding that they will be appointed as a Research Associate (salary of £31,604)upon successful completion of their PhD). The higher Research Associate salary should be backdated to the submission date of their thesis or start date whichever is the later. Applicants should have a sound knowledge of at least one programming language, familiarity with the linux operating system and shell scripting, experience in standard bioinformatic techniques and reference resources (particularly for RNA/DNA sequence analysis), and an interest in molecular biology. Previous experience of working with high-throughput RNA-Seq sequencing data would be an advantage, as would a theoretical knowledge of RNA viruses and/or RNA biology. Experience and knowledge of web development and software development are desirable. Note that this is more a technical post than a research post. The successful applicant will support a number of on-going lab projects and, while they would contribute to research papers, they would not normally expect to be the first author. The ability to work both independently as well as part of a team, coupled with good communication and excellent organizational and problem solving skills, attention to detail, and an enthusiasm for scientific research, are required. Flexible hours and/or part-time working may be accommodated for this post. The general duties/responsibilities of this post include supporting the lab's work, writing up work for presentation and publication, and potentially assisting in the supervision of student research projects (if appointed as a pre-doctoral research assistant) and, additionally, developing and driving research objectives, and delivering occasional seminars (if appointed as research associate) as outlined in the Further Information Documents. Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance. Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
