Job Description:
Applications are invited for a Research Assistant post in bioinformatics. The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary team studying virus comparative genomics, gene expression, evolution, taxonomy, RNA structure and function, and novel virus discovery. The position will be based in the laboratory of Dr Andrew Firth in the University of Cambridge at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Further information about our lab's research may be found at www.firthlab.path.cam.ac.uk. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong academic record for their career stage. Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a good degree in bioinformatics or molecular biology, virology, computer science or related disciplines or equivalent experience. Applicants should have a sound knowledge of at least one programming language, and familiarity with the linux operating system. Applicants should also have a good knowledge of basic molecular biology (e.g. first year undergraduate level) and the motivation to learn more. Experience and knowledge of web development and software development is desirable. The successful applicant will provide computational support for a number of exciting wet-lab projects, besides working on their own projects in virus genome sequence analysis. Training can be provided as appropriate The ability to work both independently as well as part of a team, coupled with good communication and excellent organizational and problem solving skills, attention to detail, and an enthusiasm for scientific research, are required. Flexible hours and/or part-time working may be accommodated for this post. General duties/responsibilities include undertaking research and providing administrative support to colleagues; analysing results of own research and generating ideas based on outcomes; conducting literature and database searches; writing up results of own research; contributing to production of research reports and publications; presenting information on research progress; and potentially assisting in the supervision of student research projects. Other general duties/responsibilities which may be required for this post are outlined in the Further Information Document. Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
