Job Description:
A Research Assistant position is available in the laboratory of Dr. David Mark Welch, Director of the Josephine Bay Paul Center for Comparative Molecular Biology and Evolution. Research in the Mark Welch lab focuses on comparative genomic and transcriptomic approaches to the biology aging, DNA repair, and genome evolution using bdelloid and monogonont rotifers as model systems. Responsibilities will vary by position level but include: general laboratory maintenance and organization; conducting life table and other in vivo experiments with rotifers; molecular biology experiments including PCR , qPCR, and construction of cDNA and genomic libraries for next-gen sequencing; developing transgenic techniques for rotifers including RNAi and CRSPR -CAS9; and bioinformatic analysis. Research Assistants in the Mark Welch lab are expected to make an intellectual contribution to research commensurate with their position and to actively participate in publications.

Basic Qualifications:
Applicants should have a B.A./B.S., or M.A/M.S. in biology, biochemistry, or a related field; and experience in a research laboratory working with rotifers or other invertebrates, and/or a strong background in molecular genetic techniques. Attention to detail, strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in bioinformatics or with transgenic techniques using models such as nematodes is preferred.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires extensive microscopy.
