Job Description:
The Research Associate is responsible for serving as the support analyst on family planning related research projects. Responsibilities include conducting statistical analysis quantitative data and interpreting results as well as analyzing qualitative data; participating in study design; assisting in writing research proposals, grants and manuscripts; and, providing support to broaden research within the Family Planning Division and the OB/ GYN Department. The Junior Research Associate will be expected to work on-site in the Family Planning Research Group’s offices at the University of Utah’s School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Research Associate will report to Dr. Jessica Sanders, Director of Family Planning Research, and Dr. David Turok, the Division Director, as well as work within the broader Family Planning Research Group.

Responsibilities:

1. Conduct statistical analyses, employ methods of descriptive statistics, sample comparisons, and regression analysis.

2. Assist with study design development and other research as needed within the program or department.

3. Format data for statistical analysis.

4. Manage data statistical packages ( STATA preferred, experience with SAS , S-Plus, SEERstat, SPSS acceptable) and write procedures in applicable program.

5. Make recommendations to respective Principal Investigator (P.I.) as to preferable methods of analysis and research formats for proposed projects; may act as the P.I. in some departments.

6. Write research proposals, grants, and manuscripts; direct preparation of manuscripts and presentation materials.

7. Review and stay current on project-related literature (contraception, unintended pregnancy, abortion, sexual and reproductive health disparities, and related topics.)

8. May devise methods and procedures for collecting data.

9. May travel to a variety of sites within and outside the University to coordinate research projects; and, acts as the University’s representative for a specialty area when contacting other departments and outside organizations.

10. May prepare and maintain regulatory documents associated with studies.

11. May support OB/ GYN residents and family planning fellows in analysis.

12. Knowledge and/or interest in the following areas with a United States focus: unintended pregnancy, contraception, abortion, sex education, publicly funded family planning services (Medicaid expansion, State Plan Amendments, Title X), provision and costs of reproductive health services, health care systems and sexual and reproductive health disparities.

Problem Solving:

The Research Associate is responsible for coordinating research while working with all levels and variety of staff internally and externally to the University. They must employ expertise to determine the most favorable research formats and methods of analysis necessary to attain research objectives. This individual is responsible for all decisions related to a specific research project including the development of survey methodologies, and may have signatory authority over all aspects of the grant or contract.

Minimum Qualifications :

Masters’s degree in sociology, public health, bioinformatics, epidemiology or a related field or equivalency; plus family planning related research experience; and demonstrated writing and analysis skills. Great interpersonal relationship and effective communication skills also required.

-Advanced statistical training and experience is required ( STATA statistical software preferred);

-Commitment to policy-relevant research;

-Experience in carrying out research on sexual and reproductive health behaviors and services and an understanding of their determinants, consequences and policy implications is required;

-Outstanding academic writing skills;

-Strong project management and organizational skills;

-Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects simultaneously;

-Ability to work as a member of a research team and communicate with supervisors, faculty and other research staff.

This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
