Job Description:
Applications are invited to apply for the position of Research Associate to work in the Group of Professor Christine Orengo at UCL. The project is in collaboration with other experimental groups at UCL.

CATH is a comprehensive protein domain family resource combining sequence, structure and functional data for over 90 milllion protein domains. This project will improve the classification of domains into functional families and the exploitation of this family data and protein network data in the prediction of protein molecular functions and biological processes. Predictions will be tested experimentally through collaboration with Professor Jurg Bahler, UCL, using a yeast fission model of ageing. This project will investigate new ways of combining protein family and network data with other types of protein data. Various machine learning strategies will be explored.

The role involves:

  • Developing improved classification of protein functional families
  • Development of algorithms for protein function prediction.
  • Development and maintenance of a public website and an in-house database containing protein function data.
  • The candidate will be part of the CATH-Gene3D team and contribute to the development of this well established international resource.
  • This post is funded for 3 years in the first instance.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in a relevant field (computer science, bioinformatics or computational biology). Experience of web programming, Java, XML, Perl, Linux and SQL are desirable. Previous experience in bioinformatics research, especially in structure-function analysis of proteins, protein networks and machine learning is desirable.

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,635 - £41,864 per annum , inclusive of London Allowance.
