Job Description:
This position focuses on the development of a high-performance computing (HPC) toolkit for forward simulations of X-ray diffraction of complex systems. The project is in collaboration with the user facility NSLS-II, and aims to provide a generic tool for carrying out virtual x-ray diffraction experiments that will serve as the testbed for novel experimental concepts and that will supply data in support of scientific discovery. The candidate will be expected to work with physicists at NSLS-II to build physics models and with computer scientists at CSI to implement them using state-of-the-art high-performance-computing practices. This position will require . The candidate will be expected to plan and carry out the research project, document progress and publish the findings in top-tier peer-reviewed conference proceedings and journals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The candidate perform independent and collaborative research and development with domain scientists from CSI and NSLS-II beamlines as well as the DAMA group of NSLS-II.
  • The candidate will implement reciprocal scan for x-ray diffraction simulations and experiments.
  • The candidate will investigate different parallel programming approaches, such as OpenMP, MPI and CUDA for performance optimization.
  • The candidate is also expected to make improvements to the modeling approach.
Position Requirements:

knowledge of x-ray diffraction physics and the understanding of different parallel programming approaches on CPU and GPU architectures, such as OpenMP, MPI and CUDARequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics/Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineerig or related area of study.
  • Knowledge of x-ray diffraction physics and the understanding of different parallel programming approaches on CPU and GPU architectures, such as OpenMP, MPI and CUDA
  • Strong programming skills in at least one of the following: C, C++ or Python.
  • Ability to make clear presentations.

Additional Info:
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

Organizational Overview:

The Computational Science Initiative (CSI) integrates computer science, mathematics, computational science, and domain science expertise and investments across Brookhaven Lab—including the flagship facilities that attract thousands of scientific users each year—to build the Laboratory’s leadership in tackling the "big data" challenges at the frontiers of scientific discovery. Building on a long history of data intensive computing research in support of application areas such as the LHC Atlas experiment, scalable numerical algorithm development and programming models the CSI now focuses on the research and development of novel data driven discovery methods. Particular focus areas are streaming analysis and multi-source data analysis. Key CSI partners include nearby universities such as Columbia, Cornell, New York University, Stony Brook, and Yale, as well as IBM Research.
