Job Description:
This position will join an enthusiastic and growing team of scientists and programmers in the Life Sciences Computing area at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC).

Essential Functions

Helps find solutions to serious technical challenges faced by our researcher communities. The Life Sciences Computing area at TACC supports a community of thousands of biologists and biomedical researchers worldwide who are working to understand the principles and mechanisms of life, feed a growing world population, and prevent or treat diseases and disabilities. Designs, creates, and supports new approaches for interactively exploring complicated data sets, enabling and encouraging collaboration, and promoting reproducible research. Investigates and evaluate emerging technologies for enabling reproducible, collaborative science. Assists in the design and delivery of TACC's web, cloud, and API-based research platforms; collaborating with domain experts to create relevant data exploration and visualization applications. Creates and maintains Jupyter notebooks and/or Docker containers illustrating use of TACC research platforms and maintaining and supporting life sciences applications on TACC systems. Compiles and maintains pertinent technical documentation; and provides training and support for users with a varying technical proficiencies. Marginal/Incidental functions

Required Qualifications:

Other related functions as assigned.

Master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, biological science, or other applied science and no experience, or bachelor's degree and two years of related experience. Experience programming in a modern language, preferably Python but Javascript, Java, and Go are also relevant. Experience working in a Linux/UNIX command line environment including basic shell scripting and system configuration. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Ability to communicate clearly and empathetically to deliver technical training and professional presentations. Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines as a member of a team. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two years of research experience in a biological science. Commitment to professional development evidenced by completion of academic or technical classes. Strong interest in enabling open, reproducible research. Excitement about projects with transformative potential for vulnerable populations. In addition, experience with some of the following is desired: source control systems, preferably Git; Software or Data Carpentry concepts; Docker or virtual machines for reproducible code; information visualization tools like Bokeh, Tableau, or Plot.ly; Jupyter or Apache Zeppelin notebooks; high performance computing systems; workflow systems such as Pegasus, Makeflow, or CWL; web development frameworks such as Node.js, React, Angular, Django, or Flask; usage or development of RESTful APIs.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
