Job Description:
The Jackson Aging Center (JAC) is seeking a Research Intern (RI) to join the Data and Statistical Core of the Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging. The JAC’s long term goal is to focus the diverse expertise of its faculty and staff in genetics and genomics on the fundamental biological processes and disorders associated with aging. The result is directing us on a path to better understanding of the molecular mechanisms at work in lifespan and health span. The primary duties of this exciting opportunity include applying best practice statistical and computational methods to analyze large-scale biological data including but not limited to genotyping arrays, gene expression by RNA-seq, DNA methylation, and proteomics. The successful candidate will participate in experimental design, apply analysis tools, and develop reproducible research procedures. Preference will be given to applicants with proficiency in R or Python programming languages.

The RI position is a temporary position lasting up to 36 months and is designed specifically for individuals with a 4-year Life Science, Biology, Computational Biology or applicable degree, looking to advance their scientific/research training prior to pursuing further educational endeavors. During the internship, Research Interns are eligible to apply for permanent positions at JAX as long as performance is rated satisfactory by their Scientific Advisor, but a permanent position is not guaranteed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: experimental design, data quality control, data analysis, and project data management.
  • The incumbent will be expected to develop and deliver presentations at lab meetings, and prepare publications and reports.
  • The Research Intern will meet weekly with the PI or Research Scientist mentoring their internship.

Required Skills

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, bioinformatics, computational sciences or related discipline.
  • Explicit interest in pursuing and completing eligibility requirements for continuing studies in biomedical and/or clinical research; or in pursuing a medical profession
  • Previous experience in an academic setting performing statistical analysis; interpreting and evaluating results, and compiling data is required.
  • The ability to work in a demanding, fast paced, team-oriented environment, while maintaining a high-level of professionalism
  • Exceptional technical skills, facility with technical software and databases and ability develop technical documents and presentations
