Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced bioinformatics scientist to lead our next-generation sequencing (NGS) efforts and to build our data analysis pipeline. Characterization and analysis of the plant transcriptome (in model systems and in crops) is a key part of Asilomar’s discovery efforts and mode of action programs. The position will work in our biology team, with close collaboration with chemistry and agronomy groups to understand compound action from the molecular level to the field scale. The position will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area and report to the VP of Biology.

Responsibilities and Duties

Roles and responsibilities will include:

  • Take a hands-on role in the development and execution Asilomar’s NGS program, including data analysis pipeline development
  • Working with the biology team, perform experiment design, setup, execution, and analysis
  • Ability and willingness to perform bench experiments as the project demands
  • Generate technical reports, and share progress during weekly meetings
  • Management of research associates (direct reports) and cross-functional collaborations with biology and agronomy teams
  • Work with biology team and company leadership to develop novel concepts, compounds, and technologies that advance our strategic goals
  • Identify, design, and execute opportunities for IP generation

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will possess the following attributes:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related fields
  • 2+ years of industry experience
  • Excellent background in NGS analysis and current NGS platforms
  • Strong programming and scripting skills (C++, Java, Python)
  • Experience with open source bioinformatics tools and genomics resources
  • Experience with database design (SQL and/or open source SQL)
  • Knowledge and experience in plant systems preferred
  • Strong problem solving and communication skills, ability to work in a team environment
Flexibility to work outside of defined position roles to meet the needs of a startup environment
