Job Description:
The Department of Periodontics has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 2. The position will entail comparative genomics, bacterial gene expression (RNAseq, Metatranscriptomics) and uncovering the relationship between bacterial functions with human disease. The position will also support laboratory applications of next generation DNA and RNA sequencing methods for a variety of projects in the lab. The Research Scientist will play a leading role in steering the computational and informatics efforts of the lab. This position requires knowledge and research experience, as well as computational skills. The position demands organization, commitment, and the ability to work alone as well as in teams.

The ideal candidate will have a strong computational background as well as biological knowledge. Prior specific experience in bioinformatic tools to perform comparative genomics, 16S rRNA sequence data processing and high throughput metagenomics/metatranscriptomics is highly desired.

Responsibilities:

  • Employ and possibly develop scripts designed to analyze high throughput gene expression or gene lists
  • Maintain domain expertise by reading research papers, attending conferences, and maintaining collaborations with relevant investigators
  • Generate production-quality figures using publishing and mathematical software
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's in Science in bioinformatics or genomics-related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of laboratory and/or computational research experience
  • Computational skills
  • Publication preparation software experience (Adobe Illustrator, Word)
Desired:
  • Master's in Science
  • Unix command-line environment
  • Comparative Genomics and Metagenomics packages
  • 16S rRNA analysis packages (QIIME, Mothur)
  • High-level programming languages such as C/C++, Python, or Perl.
  • Unix shell script programming (bash, csh, etc.) <7li>
  • Interactive mathematical packages such as matlab, Mathematica or R.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
This position requires a high degree of independence and problem-solving skills, the applicant will ideally have:
  • Experimental assay design
  • Experience managing research and laboratory staff
  • Experience in web development languages
  • Ability to publish and share code via popular version control mechanisms, such as Git
