Job Description:
The incumbent contributes to fundamental research insights into genes, pathways, gene expression, protein and genetic interactions, orthology, disease, phenotypes. They will participate in robust software engineering practices including initial R&D, the development of test suites, and maintenance/bug fixes. This role will use apply computational techniques to medical and translational research topics. In this role, the incumbent will interact with other members of the Monarch Initiative at several other national and international sites. The focus of this position will be the development of novel algorithms and software for the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) project (http://www.human-phenotyope-ontology.org). KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: -Participate in robust software engineering practices including initial R&D, the development of test suites, and maintenance/bug fixes. -Contribute to the development of bioinformatics algorithms that apply novel approaches to gain insights into disease and phenotypes as well as associated genes, pathways, gene expression, protein and genetic interactions. -Apply computational techniques to medical and translational research topics. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: -Masters’ degree or higher in a related field. -At least 3 years of experience in robust software engineering practices including initial R&D, the development of test suites, and maintenance/bug fixes. -At least 3 years of experience in one of the following: one of the areas of algorithm development, ontologies. Web engineering to develop advanced query and analysis capabilities building on a graph-based database, or advanced visualization. Expertise in Java development would be positive. -Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects at the same time and complete projects successfully and on time -Ability to develop and recommend solutions to complex problems often under time constraints. -Ability to analyze complex strategic goals and initiatives then develop executable plans to achieve goals as well as integrating best practices. -Self-starter, with ability to thrive in a fast paced and dynamic environment. -An open mind, excellent oral and written communication skills, a keen listening ability, and the ability to manage relationships with a diverse client base and work as part of an integrated team. -High integrity and positive team player. -Incumbent should be energized by the idea of contributing to fundamental research insights into disease and phenotypes as well as associated genes, pathways, gene expression, protein and genetic interactions. -Incumbent must have a background in applying computational techniques to medical and translational research topics.
