Job Description:
This is a research position in computational biology/bioinformatics, undertaking development, creation, and curation of software and websites/webservers, databases, and online tools/computer programs, and undertaking user liaison/communication functions, primarily via electronic means. The postholder will be responsible for the design, curation, and day-to-day operation of the PCDDB (Protein Circular Dichroism Data Bank), the DichroWeb analysis server, and new software and data bases. In addition, they will be expected to contribute to the development of new websites/analysis methods for computational biology methods. The duties will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience.

Candidate Requirements:

The minimum requirements for selection are listed below:

  • A degree, ideally a Masters degree, in computational biology, computer science or bioinformatics
  • Excellent computing/programming skills, including familiarity with a range of computing languages; ability to write in Python, JAVA, Perl, Fortran, C++, and/or at least one other modern upper level programming language is required. Familiarity with a range of operating systems (including Linux)
  • Expertise in creation, curation, and use of relational databases and associated search tools, including authoring clear and well-documented software and websites for use by external users
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics techniques and relational data bases for scientific data
  • Expertise in design of scientific websites
  • Evidence of ability to effectively communicate complex information to expert and non- expert scientific audiences, students, colleagues, resource users via electronic means and in reports, and oral presentations
  • This post holder will need to be able to travel in the UK and internationally to participate in meetings, workshops, conferences and user liaison meetings, as well participate in external networking and collaboration with our partnering team at Queen Mary University of London
In addition, it would be highly desirable that the candidate has knowledge of structural biology, especially protein and nucleic acid structures, and molecular graphics software for their display and analyses.
