Job Description:

There is a full-time vacancy among senior academic staff in the department of Microbiology and Immunology at KU Leuven in the area of microbiological bioinformatics. We are looking for dynamic, motivated and internationally oriented candidates (m/f) with an excellent research record in bioinformatics, and with educational competence within the field of bioinformatics.

The department of Microbiology and Immunology is internationally rewarded for its expertise in fundamental research, prevention and treatment of important diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites; the study of complex host-microbiome interaction; and the study of the immune system in infections, cancer, renal disease, autoimmunity, allergies and organ transplants. The different research groups of the department can build upon a solid research infrastructure, an extensive international network, a stable offer of highly talented PhD students and a supportive work environment.

Duties

Research

You will be responsible for setting up a research line that focusses on the development of advanced bioinformatic tools for the analysis of next generation sequencing results and microbiome analysis. You will initiate bioinformatics research projects and set up collaborations within the department of Microbiology and Immunology and other departments of the Biomedical Sciences Group. You strive for excellence in your research and thusly provide a contribution to the international character of the department. You will take charge of the scientific supervision of PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. You support national and international collaborations of the research group and further develop these. You are capable of acquiring competetive funding necessary for your research.

Teaching

You ensure high-quality education within your expertise area in the faculty of Medicine and/or other faculties, with a clear commitment for the quality of the teaching programme as a whole. You also contribute to the pedagogic project of the university through the supervision of master theses and as a promotor of PhD students. You develop your teachings in accordance with KU Leuven's vision on activating and research-based education and make use of the possibilities for the educational professionalisation offered by the faculty and the university.

Service

You are responsible for the development and organization of a bioinformatics core facility. You take charge of domain-specific support services. You contribute to the (inter)national visibility of the department.
