Scientific Programmer
Starting salary range: £29,500 - £32,780
Duration: 3 years fixed term
Location: Norwich, UK
At The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC), we have an exciting new opportunity for a Scientific Programmer to join our Triticeae Genomics Group. This role will play an active part in TGAC’s Grassroot Genomics project aimed to advance wheat genomic tools through data integration and creating a two-way communication between bioinformaticians and wheat scientists and breeders. In particular, this role will be responsible for the design, implementation and deployment of software pipelines for the integration of the genomic and genetic data available for wheat and related species. Other aspects of the role include:
To assess and improve the quality of the wheat assemblies using internal and external supporting evidence such as flcDNAs, ESTs, RNA-seq data and annotation from other related species. To evaluate the quality of the positional and mapping data generated by the scientific community (e.g. physical map). To develop software pipeline to integrate the wheat physical maps with the whole genome sequence (WGS) assemblies. To adopt mapping-by-sequencing pipelines to wheat and evaluate them against the existing datasets. To facilitate integration of the data in national and international public repositories
To be considered for this role candidates must have the following qualifications, skills and experience:
PhD in computational biology or natural science discipline with background in NGS data analyses. Experience with bioinformatics tools. Experience of working in a high throughput datasets. Proven track record in the use of scripting programing languages (e.g. Perl, Python) Good written communications skills. To be able to communicate clearly with TGAC staff at all levels. Able to work as part of an effective team, and a good team player.
