Job Description:
The Eddy/Rivas laboratory, a computational biology research group with Harvard University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (eddylab.org) is seeking a Scientific Software Engineer to join the software development team to develop two widely used software packages for biological sequence analysis: HMMER (hmmer.org) and Infernal (eddylab.org/infernal). The team is working on the next major releases of these tools, and this position also offers the opportunity to participate in fundamental computational biology algorithms research.

Responsibilities include: Parallelization, optimization, development, maintenance, and automated testing of the HMMER and Infernal codebases on multiple platforms.

Basic Qualifications:

BS in computer science or equivalent and 5+ years of software development experience.

Additional Qualifications:

-No knowledge of biology is required, but interest in learning is a strong plus.

-Expertise in scientific/numerical code in ANSI C99.

-Expertise in high performance computing and parallelization using POSIX threads and MPI.

-Expertise in typical open source C development environment tools such as git, autoconf, and make.

-Expertise in UNIX operating systems (Linux, Mac OS/X).

-Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a small but geographically-distributed team.

This is a four-year term appointment from date of hire with possible term extension based on funding.
