Scientist, Bioinformatics

Job Description:
The Scientist will be responsible for leading bioinformatics and sequencing data analysis projects at ATCC. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and in bioinformatics and next generation sequencing technologies. The responsibilities include to develop a plan of action including schedules and resources required including the independent design, development, and implementation of strategies for data management and analysis. The incumbent will be integral part of the cross-functional project teams and will perform basic and advanced analyses of data sets using current open source software and by developing new analytical tools and pipelines for NGS data sets. The successful candidate will have a background in bioinformatics, biostatistics or computational biology and experience working in a Linux/Unix environment and developing scripts for processing data in languages such as Perl, Python, JAVA, C++ and/or R.

The Scientist may be responsible for other R&D activities including development of new and/or improved characterization and validation methods for next generation sequencing, data analysis and other projects consistent with the goals and objectives of ATCC. It is expected the incumbent supervises and mentors the staff, while leading by example, and enforces all ATCC corporate policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Research & Development

  • Develops new and/or improved authentication and validation methods.
  • Develops new biomaterial and reagent groups and systems, as applicable, consistent with the objectives of the ATCC.
  • Responsible for providing leadership and managing a specified biomaterial group and/or R&D team. Management of the biomaterial group includes characterization, authentication, preservation, maintenance and distribution of cell lines, microorganisms, or reagents procured by the incumbent or other individuals within the ATCC.
  • May design, build and direct internal and external research activities and collaborations, as applicable.
  • Interacts with other corporate programs, to foster a productive research environment.
Supervisory Responsibilities, if applicable:
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Has authority either directly or through recommendations for employment decisions to include selection, training, performance evaluation, counseling, promotion and termination.
  • Participates in or conducts regular staff meetings to communicate pertinent corporate and program information.
  • Fosters a positive work environment.

  • Ensures staff complies with all safety requirements.
Scientific, Customer and other external interactions
  • Provides scientific expertise to internal and external customers as applicable.
  • Manages interactions with depositors and advisor's as needed/assigned.
  • Manages research collaborations with internal and external groups.
  • Participates in professional activities both internal and external to ATCC.
  • Maintains memberships in appropriate scientific societies.
  • Submits data for publication and/or patent protection when applicable.
  • Keeps abreast of current, relevant literature and technologies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatisics or Statistics or related field and 2-5 years of relevant experience OR
  • Mater's degree in a Bioinformatics, Biostatisics or Statistics or related field and 10-13 years of relevant experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree in a Bioinformatics, Biostatisics or Statistics or related field and 12-15 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with Linux Operating System, Mac OS X Operating system, SQL/MySQL/Postgres, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience with Data Mining, Metadata Creation and Management, Problem Solving, Troubleshooting.
  • Experience Developing scripts for processing data in languages such as Perl, Python, JAVA, C++ and/or R.
  • Positions requiring supervisor experience need an additional one to two years of project lead, project management or supervisory experience.
  • Experience in the biotech industry highly desirable.
  • Previous publication or presentations of relevant scientific information required. Must have demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Understanding of computing resources required for large bioinformatics-based projects
  • Ability to analyze next generation sequencing data.
  • Experience working with cross-functional product development teams is desirable as is experience in external collaborations.
  • Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts. Reputation as emerging leader in relevant scientific field with sustained performance and accomplishments.
  • Ability to effectively manage, organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and be a proponent of continuous improvement.
  • Sound judgment to identify, evaluate and correct problems.
  • Proven management skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to lead by example.
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, and focused.
  • Knowledge of the business side of science i.e. cost of acquisitions, return on investments, development of new products, processes, technologies.
  • Knowledgeable/experienced with innovative technology in relevant scientific area.
