Job Description:
As a key member of the VL45 Research and Development team, the Scientist, Computational Biology will enable VL45’s pioneering work in microbiome pharmacology. In close collaboration with VL45 team members in chemistry and biology, the candidate will develop and apply computational methods that support VL45’s efforts to identify bacterial metabolites, metabolic pathways, and novel natural products with the potential to impact host physiology. In close collaboration with VL45 team members in chemistry and biology, the candidate will develop and apply computational methods that support VL45’s efforts to identify bacterial metabolites, metabolic pathways, and novel natural products with the potential to impact host physiology. Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or related field.
- Proficiency in a relevant programming language such as Python or R and standard command line tools
- Significant research experience in computational biology/bioinformatics, with demonstrated ability to work effectively in a closely integrated interdisciplinary team and derive actionable biological conclusions from next generation sequencing data.
- Experience working with shotgun metagenome sequencing data from complex environments
- Experience predicting or annotating enzyme functions based on gene or amino acid sequences
- Familiarity with applicable databases (e.g. KEGG, BioCyc, PFAM, EggNOG…)
- Experience with the human microbiome
- Knowledge of metabolic-pathway-oriented analysis methods preferred
