Job Description:
We seeking a Senior Bioinformatician/Computational Bioscientist to join an established multi-disciplinary team as part of Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM) consortium.

As our Senior Scientist, you will contribute to and lead computational biology and bioinformatics within a team that includes software engineers and genetic and population genetic expertise. You will be responsible for delivery of specific tasks relating to project deliverables. These include collaborating in the on-going upgrading of a scalable platform for storing and exchanging clinical and genetic data, participating in currently implemented algorithms for mapping, assembling and analysing pathogen molecular variation, prediction of gene content (including plasmids, virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance) and transmission relationships; and integrating whole genome sequencing and epidemiology data into schemes for large-scale association studies and surveillance. This requires working with scientists in the MMM consortium, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, PHE and industrial collaborators such as Illumina and Oxford Nanopore. The sharp increase in long-read sequencing data driven by increasing use of PacBio and Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms requires the group to extend the system to perform analyses using a combination of these and Illumina short-read sequencing technologies You will also undertake a supervisory role for new members of the bioinformatics team ensuring that they are familiar with current informatics methods within the group. Lead on software changes and implementation in existing workflows.

You will hold a PhD in genomics, evolutionary biology, statistics or a related subject. You will have strong computational skills, experience in large-scale bioinformatics analysis of sequence data with an enquiring and flexible attitude and an interest in working collaboratively with researchers from different disciplines. You will also have experience in supervision of PhD students and/or staff.
