Job Description:
Objectives Of The Programme: Two complementary strategies are currently adopted by the Infections and Cancer Biology Group (ICB) to study the role of infections in human cancers: (i) Functional studies to characterize the biological properties of specific infectious agents using in vitro and in vivo model systems (ii) Development of laboratory assays that are being extensively used in epidemiological studies to evaluate the contribution of infections in cancer. With regard to the functional studies, ICB′s research is focused on the characterization of the biological properties of oncoproteins from several human viruses, i.e. mucosal and cutaneous human papillomavirus (HPV) types, Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). In particular, ICB has evaluated the ability of viral oncoproteins to deregulate pathways involved in cellular transformation and immune response. With regard to the second strategy, ICB′s efforts are focused on the development of highly sensitive diagnostic assays for many infectious agents that can be used for large-scale epidemiological studies. Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Infections and Cancer Biology (ICB) Group, within the Infections (INF) Section, and in close collaboration with scientists in the section and others working in bioinformatics at IARC, the incumbent provides programming support to projects that require bioinformatics approaches to characterize the relevant genomic and epigenomic changes associated to infections that underlie the mechanisms of cancer formation. The Main Duties Of The Incumbent Are Summarized As Follows -Provide bioinformatic support to the ICB Group by: 1. writing/adapting scripts/packages for the manipulation of the data generated by the Group's laboratory activities (including but not limited to OMICS data, transcriptomics, exome/whole genome/transcriptome sequencing, de novo sequencing data). 2. assisting scientists in the analysis and publication of such data (including submission to central repositories) which is aimed to characterize the genome of infectious agents. -Assist scientists in data analysis by: 1. carrying out statistical analysis. 2. formating and presenting data in a user-friendly style for inclusion in scientific documents. -As part of the Agency's central bioinformatics resources: 1. ensure that newly deployed methodologies in ICB are available across IARC and to the wider scientific community, as appropriate. 2. share expertise with bioinformaticians in other IARC groups by participating in working groups, seminars and training organized internally. 3. Interact with other groups at IARC, in particular ITS and GCS, to ensure that the high performance computing and information technology resources developed at IARC meet ICB Group needs; this includes membership in the BISC (Bioinformatics Steering Committee). 4. Keep abreast of technological developments in bioinformatic resources and tools relevant to the projects conducted in the Section. Produce regular activity report and present those during group and section meetings. -Other related technical duties as requested by the supervisor. Education: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Essential: Graduation from secondary school or equivalent, and subsequent training (BTS, DUT or equivalent) in the field of specialization with possession of a diploma in bioinformatics, computer science, or related field. Desirable: Masters degree in biostatistics, bioinformatics, biomathematics or equivalent. Training in biology. Skills: -Knowledge of R for statistical analysis and data visualization is required. Knowledge of other statistical packages (Stata, SAS) would be an advantage. -Knowledge of one or more scripting or programming languages (e.g. Perl, Python, Ruby, C++ or Java etc.), preferably in a Unix environment is required. -Skills in Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) are mandatory. -Good general understanding of molecular and cell biology is required. -Experience in manipulating massively-parallel sequencing datasets would be an advantage. -Experience in using a High Performance Computing cluster job scheduler (e.g. LSF, SGE, Torque, SLURM etc.) would be an advantage. -Ability to clearly communicate results to a variety of audiences both orally and in writing. -Ability to work autonomously and to prioritize work in a demanding work environment. -Ability to create clear, concise figures for publications and slides. -Ability to work harmoniously as a member of a team with people of diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. Experience: Essential: at least 5 years' professional experience (beyond the essential educational requirements) including one year using scripting languages and R programming, preferably in a research environment and one year handling sequence-based genomic data. Desirable: experience with bioinformatics tools for primary data processing and secondary data analyses (i.e. annotations, visualization). Languages: Expert knowledge of English or French with an intermediate knowledge of the other language; knowledge of another WHO official language (Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic) would be an asset.
Additional Info:
This recruitment is restricted to candidates residing at the time of submitting their application, within a maximum distance of 50 kms from Lyon. Important Note: In your application submitted, we ask that you specify all of the statistical packages you have worked with (e.g. R, Stata, SAS, other...) and your user level of each package. Online applications can be filled out in English or in French. However, all candidates for this position should include in their online application, a cover letter in English. Only candidates under serious consideration will be contacted for test and interview. Annual salary: Euros 39870, net of French income tax (before deduction of the employee share of private social insurances applicable at IARC, i.e. staff health and accident insurances and pension fund). WHO/IARC has its own Staff Health Insurance and Pension plans and is not part of the French Social Security system ("Sécurité Sociale"), the French Pension system or the French unemployment benefit agency("Pôle-Emploi"). This vacancy notice may be used to fill other similar positions at the same grade level. Online applications are strongly encouraged to enable WHO to store your profile in a permanent database. All applicants are encouraged to apply online as soon as possible after the vacancy has been posted and well before the deadline stated in the vacancy announcement. WHO is committed to workforce diversity. Any appointment/extension of appointment is subject to WHO Staff Regulations, Staff Rules and Manual. Only candidates under serious consideration will be contacted. Currently accepting applications IARC has a smoke-free environment and does not recruit smokers or users of any form of tobacco.[Click Here to Access the Original Job Post]
