Senior Scientist in Computational Biology

Siemens Healthcare Laboratory R&D

Berkeley, CA

This Senior Scientist in Computational Biology will report to the Head of R&D and Technology for the Siemens Healthcare Laboratory in Berkeley, CA. The Computational Biologist will be primarily responsible for designing, implementing and validating new and improved data analysis pipelines for Next Generation Sequencing. Additional responsibilities include development of data and statistical analysis methods for studies of molecular tests and immunoassays in the context of selection or monitoring of patients treated with targeted therapies.

The position is within Siemens Healthcare Laboratory R&D, which provides our pharmaceutical industry partners and molecular services customers with decades of institutional expertise in development and implementation of diagnostic assays. Computational Biology is a core capability that enables the effective use of our tests for research, as clinical trial assays, and as Laboratory Developed Tests. The successful candidate will support a broad range of project teams, coordinate activities with colleagues at other Siemens R&D sites, and may oversee the work of several other Siemens data scientists or contractors.

Responsibilities:

  • Implementation and maintenance of data analysis pipelines and analytical tools that enable comprehensive genetic tumor profiling
  • Development and improvement of algorithms to identify chromosomal copy number changes and other actionable genomic alterations in tumor DNA derived from clinical specimens such as FFPE, fresh frozen tissue or blood samples
  • Processing and interpretation of large data sets generated by our NGS teams, including development and implementation of analytical tools for troubleshooting
  • Development of methods and software tools to support large-scale bioinformatics analysis
  • Documentation and testing of newly developed algorithms
Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:
  • MS or PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or other related scientific disciplines is expected, although a BS with extensive work experience may be considered
  • Experience in NGS data processing and evaluation
  • Experience with bioinformatics tools and databases
  • Knowledge of cancer genetics and biology
  • Knowledge of programming and scripting languages such as R, C++ and Python
  • Effective English skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to work in a team
Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:
  • Experience in working with regulated software is a plus
  • Additional knowledge of molecular virology, immunology, cardiovascular disease, neurology, or other medical fields of application for advanced computational biology methods
  • Additional expertise in applications of biostatistics related to evaluation and selection of biomarkers for companion diagnostics development
