Job Description:
A Senior Bioinformatics Analyst position is available in Dr. Steven Chen’s translational bioinformatics laboratory at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The position will be supported by multiple NCI R01 and similar grants focusing on translational bioinformatics research for colorectal and triple-negative breast cancers. The candidate will be working in a collaborative environment with biostatisticians and bioinformaticians on translational cancer research. We are seeking highly motivated individuals to implement cutting-edge high-throughput genomic data analysis pipelines. The Analyst will also be guided to develop new tools that improve currently available tools. Our lab has close connection with the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, which provides additional opportunities to work with data generated from cutting-edge genomic technologies at Sylvester. Other opportunities for postdoctoral fellow and Assistant/Associate Scientist (PhD level) positions are also available.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pipeline development:

• Developing, maintaining, and implementing next generation sequencing data analysis pipelines that perform QC, base calling, sequence assembly, short-read alignment, genotype calling, transcript abundance, sequence annotation, and related bioinformatics methods.

• Developing and implementing novel NGS methods to improve the existing pipelines. This includes testing third-party software or development of novel methodology to fill gaps in the pipeline, as needed.

• Testing, characterization and integration of diverse third-party Bioinformatics algorithms; applying state-of-the-art statistical, visualization and data mining methods.

Analysis:

• Provide analysis of NGS data for genes and pathways, analysis of epigenomics data such as methylation and non-coding RNA, and developing and implementing new bioinformatics packages.

Administrative:

• Supervision of junior bioinformatics team members and data analysts (e.g., statistical data analysts, post-docs, etc) on bioinformatics projects, as needed.

• Establishing standard operating procedures, documentation and scripts to generate custom reports.

• Developing materials for Bioinformatics tutorials, and training courses

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Computer Science or related field and three (3) years of experience working in Bioinformatics or a related field is required. Master’s Degree/PhD in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Computer Science or related field is preferred. Excellent communications skills in English (both verbal and written) are highly desirable. Proficiency with Linux/UNIX systems and using R/Bioconductor and Perl/Python for genomic data analysis is required. Experiences with developing genomic databases, bioinformatics software or R/Bioconductor packages are also highly desirable. Fluency with MySQL and experiences with database development is preferred. Salary is competitive with market rate.
