Join the HJF Team! HJF is seeking a Sr. Bioinformatics Scientist to support the Laboratory of Integrative Multiomics within the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP. We are looking for an enthusiastic, energetic, and motivated Bioinformatics Scientist to join our research effort investigating the functional consequences of human genetic, transcriptome, epigenetic and microbiome variation on HIV-1 and emerging diseases pathogenesis (https://www.hivresearch.org/our-team/rasmi-thomas-phd). The candidate will be responsible for designing, leading, and carrying out integrative analyses of these ‘omics’ data, to elucidate cellular pathways and networks that are associated with immune responses to infectious diseases. Candidate will have direct supervisory roles over junior staff, in addition to providing said staff with guidance and support in building analytical workflows.  
Responsibilities:
  1. The candidate will implement analysis workflows to facilitate multi-omics analysis and pursue bioinformatics analyses in collaboration with scientists at MHRP and other branches at WRAIR by building analytical workflows using bioinformatics tools to interpret NGS data. (25%)
  2. Analyze and manage large and computationally complex datasets. (20%)
  3. Responsible for maintaining/extending/automating bioinformatics workflows, improving efficiency, facilitating QC activities. (15%)
  4. Trains, supervises, and gives guidance junior scientists and bioinformatics analysts. (20%)
  5. Author scientific publications based on both research findings and data analysis results derived from employing standard and novel analysis methodologies. (20%)
  6. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
 
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Extensive experience with next generation sequencing computational and analytical tools. The ability to construct high-throughput analysis pipelines for omics data, and to integrate with in-house databases.  Must be highly motivated to solve biological problems, and have experience analyzing large-scale and high-throughput genomics datasets (e.g., whole genome sequencing, ChIP-Seq, methyl-seq, metabolomics or RNA-Seq datasets).
  2. Experience working with a Linux cluster environment. Experience working with job scheduling such as LSF, PBS, or SLURM. The candidate should have a good knowledge of one scripting language for handling large-scale data (e.g., Python, Perl), and one programming language for implementing computational models and algorithms (R, Matlab, Python, C/C++).
  3. Must be an enthusiastic, self-directed, and communicative team player; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; must possess excellent writing and communication skills and be able to supervise junior bioinformaticians. The candidate will be able to work independently as indicated by their ability to publish papers.

Minimum Education: Doctoral degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related scientific discipline is required.  
Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 6-8 years of relevant work experience required.  
Work Environment: Set in an office work environment.  
Background/Security: Must have lived in the U.S. 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/ Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
