Job Description:
The Staff Research Associate IV (SRA IV) position is available in a translational research program in the molecular immunology, genetics and genomics of inherited disorders of the immune system. Prior experience and accomplishment with immunology and genetics protocols as well as human samples will be essential. Genetic and genomic techniques as well as gene expression, immune phenotyping and functional testing will be performed to define the nature of primary immune disorders and their responses to treatment. Appropriate controls must be designed and included with each experiment. Synthesis and use of gene transfer vectors including plasmids and retroviruses will be required. The individual will need to perform genomic analysis (including but not limited to sequencing, primer design, SNP array analysis, chromatin immunoprecipitation, whole exome or whole genome sequence analysis), immunologic investigations, cultivation and differentiation of mouse and human hematopoietic cells and lymphocytes, and abstractions and data mining using patient medical records. Management of a relational database of patient and sample data will be required. Particular emphasis will be on patients identified by newborn screening as having T cell defects, some of whom will have as yet undefined conditions.

As a Lab Manager, the SRA IV will be responsible for planning with the Principal Investigator (PI)-supervisor long range experimental programs as well as performing day-to-day trouble-shooting for scientific and logistical laboratory matters. Assisting and teaching other members of the research team is required. Organizing details of multicenter collaborations will be required along with ongoing management to make sure these run smoothly. Liaison with AA for ordering and maintenance. Excellent written and spoken English essential.

Required Qualifications:

• BA/BS degree in a related science and three or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas: or an equivalent combination of education and experience

• Three or more years related experience in bioinformatics or laboratory work following degree completion

• Facility with genomic databases

• Experience performing cellular, biochemical and molecular studies using flow cytometry and sorting, western, northern, quantitative rt-pcr, immunofluorescence microscopy, colorimetric assays

• Technical skills in research and proof of accomplishments

• Ability to perform basic statistical analyses

• Outstanding written, verbal, organizational, and computer skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills

• Ability to diagnose problems when something in the laboratory is not working, respond, and address in a timely manner

• Ability to handle sensitive clinical information appropriately

• Ability to work with human & mouse specimens and cells

• Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team and in a self-directed manner; meet deadlines; train others

• Ability to deal with collaborators and outside contacts

• Willingness and ability to learn new skills for changing research priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

• MS in molecular biology or bioinformatics

• Ability to search genomic databases, locate and describe DNA variants with correct terminology, use exome analysis programs
