Tech Lead (Architecture path)

Next-gen genomic sequencing is a new frontier. The complexity and sheer size of the data in the life sciences will make astronomical data problems look modest. Bina is laying the groundwork for the future by developing novel bioinformatics algorithms, data analysis tools, and back-end infrastructures so researchers can develop better diagnostics and cures, faster. The path to curing cancer lies in ones and zeros.

Our team builds distributed, secure and multi-tenant systems that deal with petabytes of data on a daily basis.
No flashy cell phone applications, no complex bioinformatics or statistics (unless you're into that kind of thing), no ad networks. All we do is develop complex, globally distributed systems to process the largest most complex kind of data the field of computing has encountered. Then our clients use them to speed up diagnosis and cures for diseases, even cancer.

Reporting to the CTO, this Lead role will be part of the product architecture team. To be successful you will need to leverage a deep technical background and interest in architecture, design, and development of products in the enterprise software and Internet software space.
We will be most interested in seeing your track record of working on large scale, products that may have started obscure and unknown, but evolved into name brands in a short perioud of time. We will also want to hear how you've built upon, integrated, and improved existing products while leading large teams of 5-15 engineers.
As a Tech Lead at Bina, you will work with other architects, team leads, to establish roadmaps for distributed and scale out software infrastructure, cloud and on premises deployment, security and compliance to relevant regulatory requirements and more.
How you will spend your time:
Leading infrastructure requirements gathering, and design specification reviews. Designing, prototyping, and architecting key features across all components. Mentoring, leading, and training team members technically. Participating in customers call and product management meetings. Collaborating with other architecture teams within Roche different units. Creating the world’s best, distributed software infrastructure for genome analysis. Learning new technologies and becoming productive extremely fast. Speaking on public events and blog about Bina technical solutions. Experience, skills, talents you will need:
Currently hands-on and active in Software Development, and some architecture leadership. (leading 5-15+ engineers) Fanatical attention to detail. Successful track record as Lead or architect for at least 1 product with significant production customers. Fluent understanding of software, web technologies, distributed systems, and high-performance cloud computing platforms. Expertise with Java (C++ is also helpful, but should have deep knowledge of Java) Experienced with cloud applications, deployment models, and deep knowledge with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Google cloud, Azure). M.S. or PhD in computer science

That’s six hundred times larger than the data generated over 3 years on YouTube. We’re talking about exabytes (10 18 ) of raw, unprocessed, sequence data in a few years. From a tech-perspective, the genomics world is really behind computer science, but it means we have this opportunity to leap years ahead – not just make incremental changes.
