Job Description:

We seek outstanding researchers who are developing computational methods in all areas of biology for tenure-track and research-track positions at all levels in the Lane Center for Computational Biology, a department within our School of Computer Science.

We especially seek candidates working in biological and medical imaging, genomics, and those using advanced machine learning methods to analyze measurements of complex phenomena.

Faculty in the Lane Center conduct research on a broad range of topics related to computational biology and bioinformatics, including genomics, human genetics, systems biology, structural biology, biostatistics, and other areas. Research in the Center typically advances sophisticated computational methodologies and is well grounded in computer science.

Appointments will be made at a level commensurate with experience and will be made either entirely in the Lane Center or jointly with other departments in the University as appropriate to the background and interests of the candidate. Hires in research-track appointments focus primarily on research, are supported by external funding, and need not teach any courses. Tenure-track positions involve both research and regular teaching.

New faculty members will be expected to both contribute to and benefit from the collaborative spirit that is a hallmark of Carnegie Mellon University and from opportunities to collaborate with other institutions in the Pittsburgh region. Faculty in the Lane Center regularly advise students from other departments such as machine learning, and the language technologies institute. Pittsburgh is home to several world-class research and medical institutions, including the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (consistently ranked in the top 20 hospitals in the country) and the Pittsburgh Supercomputer Center. The Lane Center runs a joint Ph.D. program with University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Applications will be accepted through January 5, 2015. The School of Computer Science uses a centralized application system for all departments, which can be accessed at https://webapps.cs.cmu.edu/FacultyApplication/SCS/Welcome. A complete application will include the applicant’s CV, a cover letter, a statement of past and future research interests, a statement of teaching interests, and names and contact information for 3 people who have been asked to provide letters of reference.

Carnegie Mellon is an EEO/Affirmative Action Employer - M/F/Disability/Veteran.
