Two Postdoctoral positions in Microbial Systems Biology/Antibiotic Resistance/Bioinformatics: Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA

Job description

Two NIH funded postdoctoral positions in microbial systems biology and antibiotic resistance are available in the van Opijnen lab at the Biology Department at Boston College. The lab consists of a dry and wet-bench side that mainly focuses on three topics: 1. The development and application of new genome-wide strategies to determine how pathogens deal with and overcome the stressors in their environment (e.g. antimicrobials, the host immune system); 2. The development of novel assays to mine antimicrobials; and 3. The development of novel bioinformatics and analyses tools.  The lab studies different gram positive and negative bacterial pathogens and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology including a robotics system, two massively parallel sequencers and microfluidics systems, which are used in experiments including high-throughput screens, adaptation experiments (in vitro and in vivo), Immune System profiling, full genome sequencing, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq and Tn-seq (for more info visit: www.vanopijnenlab.com).

The candidates will be part of a multi-institute project that is led by the van Opijnen lab and will preferentially perform both computational as well as experimental work that focuses on the emergence of antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens that experience both drug and immune pressure. Ultimately the exact focus will be determined in discussions with the PI and will be in accordance with the candidate’s interests and talents.

Requirements

Ability to conduct collaborative research. Excellent English communication skills both in written and oral form. A PhD in (micro)biology, computer science, bioinformatics, biophysics or a related discipline. NB. A strong willingness and ability to learn is considered more important than experience in the topics studied in the lab. A track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Experience with mouse experiments, NGS-techniques, microfluidics, bioinformatics and or in statistical methods, programming languages (e.g. Python, Perl), mathematical modeling, and/or analysis of large-scale sequencing data is a plus.

How to apply

Please send a cover letter, a letter describing your professional interests and ambitions, a curriculum vitae and contact information for at least two references to Dr. van Opijnen at tim.vanopijnen@bc.edu. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
