Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Bioinformatics & Computational Biology

Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Cumming School of Medicine

The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invite applications for an outstanding researcher in the area of Bioinformatics or Computational Biology, who is ready to join a dynamic group of investigators in our new Centre for Health Genomics and Informatics and share their vision to transform health care through genomics and informatics. The successful candidate will be appointed to a full-time appointment with tenure at the Associate or Full Professor level and will be nominated for an NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair.

The Cumming School of Medicine recently received a transformative naming gift of $200 million that is energizing our vision of Creating the Future of Health. To help fulfill this mission, the Centre for Health Genomics and Informatics, a collaboration that includes various University-wide partners, is seeking a candidate whose bioinformatics skills, leadership qualities and vision will help position us as a leading Center in precision medicine.

Applicants at the Associate Professor level must possess a strong publication record; evidence of successful teaching and supervision; and a record of established academic engagement in professional and other communities. Applicants at the Professor level must provide evidence of an outstanding academic publication record; outstanding teaching and supervisory experience; and evidence of strong academic service and/or leadership. Additional requirements for the position include a Ph.D. degree or equivalent; demonstrated successful application of bioinformatics to the analysis of large scale genome, transcriptome, epigenome or related datasets; and a strong background in computing science, statistics and/or machine learning. Expectations for the position include the establishment of a vigorous, sustainable, externally-funded research program (for which 75% time will be protected), contribution to teaching and graduate student supervision, and participation in leadership for recruitment, research, education and service. This is an excellent opportunity to build and develop an innovative research program within a dynamic and collaborative environment. A competitive salary and an attractive start-up package will be provided.

The successful candidate will join a blossoming multidisciplinary and inter-Faculty team of bioinformaticians, clinical researchers and basic scientists at the Centre, whose research includes the study of rare genetic disorders, cancer genomics, the enteric microbiome, inflammation and chronic disease, animal health, comparative genomics, as well as diagnostic testing. Our team will continue to grow through the future recruitment of two additional junior academic bioinformaticians, as well as several service analysts. The Centre for Human Genomics and Informatics is a cornerstone of the Cumming School of Medicine’s future Strategic Plan, and is supported by state of the art genomics laboratories as well as both undergraduate and graduate training programs specializing in bioinformatics.
