The Department of Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry (MMB; department chair Prof. dr. J.S. Sinninghe Damsté), is looking for a Senior Marine Prokaryotic Microbiologist with a solid experience in bioinformatics, computer science, applied mathematics, physics or related science with good knowledge of application in biological sciences. We study the ecology, physiology and diversity of eukaryotic phytoplankton, prokaryotes (archaea and bacteria) and viruses and their interaction in diverse marine environmental settings. The microbial ecologists in the department rely more and more on modern omics techniques, including environmental genomics, that generate vast amounts of biological data. To this end we collaborate with the Utrecht Bioinformatics Center (UBC) of Utrecht University. MMB is equipped with state-of-the art laboratories and analytical equipment and has an excellent level of technical support. It receives extensive external funding through, amongst others, two ERC advanced grants and its participation in two Gravitation grants. The department is closely cooperating with other scientific departments within the Royal NIOZ, and with national universities. THE VACANCY To further advance our activities using omics techniques we seek a computational scientist with a solid track record reflecting innovative biological research that is based on bioinformatics. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an innovative and externally funded research program. You will develop the facilities for bioinformatic approaches at MMB and work in close collaboration with the microbial ecologists and our partners at Utrecht University. Start-up packages include a 4 year PhD position and limited start-up funds, financed from the collaborative research program with Utrecht University. Internal financial support for sequencing and access to Nano-SIMS facilities at Utrecht University is guaranteed for a period of ten years. Dedicated technicians running the microbiology, microbial ecology and biogeochemistry labs are available and will also be assisting the newly hired staff. We are seeking 1-2 postdoctoral fellows for laboratory research in the field of transplantation immunobiology, xenogeneic transplantation, tissue engineering, and nanomedicine. A Ph.D. or M.D. degree with previous research experience in cellular or molecular immunology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, nanomedicine or related fields is the minimal requirement for application. Candidates with previous experiences in animal models of transplantation immunobiology, infection, autoimmunity, immune tolerance, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, and tissue engineering are particularly encouraged to apply. The Genome Centre Cologne at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne is seeking a Head of Genome Centre to lead the genomics service group. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing state of the art next generation DNA sequencing technology and related genomics methods to scientists at the MPIPZ and partner Max Planck Institutes. The BRC includes core facilities that offer resources and services in genomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry, imaging, bioinformatics and bio-IT. The Director fosters interactions between faculty researchers and the BRC, and among the BRC core facilities, to promote cutting edge, innovative life sciences research. In concert with faculty and BRC core facility directors, the Director assesses interest in, and need for, emerging biotechnology instrumentation, infrastructure and services. The Director catalyzes the development of service linkages, instrument acquisition, and outreach to make existing and emerging technologies known to the greater academic community. Area of responsibilities/description of work This postdoctoral research position is immediately available in the research group of Dr. Margaret Sällberg Chen. The position is for a scientist with background in disease conditions associated with dysfunctional oral microbiota. The candidate will be part of a research team that aims at understanding new mechanistic insights of in patients suffering from diseases related to infection or microbiota dysfunction and microbial translocation. The work comprises monitoring of microbiome/metabolome dynamics to study interactions between oral microbiota and pathological reactions including cancer. Disease-specific markers will be investigated to develop diagnostic methods and individualized therapeutic strategies to improve human health. The post doctoral fellows to be recruited to the project will be part of a multidisciplinary team and are expected to take active part in collaborative efforts, in line with the overall aims of this project. The studies will require methodological skills - from handling of human biopsy/biofluid to RNA/DNA purification quality controls for sequencing and metabolomics analysis.
