Assistant Specialist (Bioinformatics)

Job Description:
Duties and Responsibilities:

-Works in close collaboration with other members of JABSOM bioinformatics team, providing comprehensive bioinformatic support and collaborations to faculty and staff in the school and university, including the development of grant proposals and scientific manuscripts and participates in educational activities.

-Provides big data management, analytical, and interpretative support and collaborations using “omics” data, to basic science, clinical and translational research projects.

-Collaborates on grant applications and manuscripts.

-Participate in other consultation and services as assigned.

-Conduct bioinformatics research related to issues arising from collaboration or consultation projects.

-Develops and provides quantitative health sciences related education and training.

-Participates on committees of candidates for advanced degrees and supervises independent study activities. -Serves on department, School, and University committees.

-Renders service to the professional or lay community relevant to academic specialty.

-Performs related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

-At least three years of experience in bioinformatics, or a related field as Junior Specialist or its equivalent. Master’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing with emphasis in bioinformatics or related field.

-30 credits of graduate study in bioinformatics from a college or university of recognized standing.

-Excellent skills data management and bioinformatics analysis.

-Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators as necessary.

-Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the work of assistants when appropriate.

-Experience collaborating with multiple research investigators, providing bioinformatic support.

-Experience in manipulating, analyzing, and annotating large high-throughput molecular measurements (e.g. next generation sequencing and microarray data), using packages such as Bioconductor.

-Experience with script programming language, such as Python or Perl. Experience with statistical analysis using standard statistical packages, such as R.

-Knowledge of statistical principles and techniques. Knowledge of various bioinformatics tools and algorithms.

-Ability to implement components of a bioinformatics software pipeline to analyze next generation “omics” data.

-Ability to plan and organize assigned activities. Self-motivated and enjoys the challenge of analyzing complex problems and independently developing possible solutions.

Must have critical thinking skills and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Desirable Qualifications:

-Experience in academic biomedical and translational research.

-Teaching experience.

-Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

-PhD in bioinformatics or related field.

-Knowledge and understanding of high-throughput data analysis from multi-platforms (e.g., genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, or metabolomic data), both in exploratory and pipelined fashions. Experience with Linux, Windows and Mac platforms.

-Knowledge of database and web technology.
