Job Description:
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is currently recruiting for a Bioinformatics Analyst II. Bioinformatics Analysts at IGS contribute to genomic research projects and scientific analysis of the data generated by those projects using a variety of database and software applications. They help to generate, annotate, gather or analyze data and prepare for further analysis, and research.

A new position is available on an NIH-funded project to study human genome variation in tens of thousands of human individuals using whole genome sequencing data. The ideal candidate will have experience using Illumina and PacBio whole genome sequencing data for discovering human genome variation, particularly structural variants.

Essential Functions:

  • Following established procedures or specific scientific protocols, add value to data generated by genome sequencing projects through assembly, annotation, curation, and quality assurance.
  • Working with large consortia on team science, interfacing with project leaders and assigned point persons to generate primary data by mining existing BAM and CRAM files or other data structures such as VCF, etc
  • Analyzing the resulting data and integrating with other omics data sets. For example, analyzing chromosomal mapping distributions relative to genes and gene features
  • Integrate and analyze data from genome sequencing projects, functional genomics analysis, and other school of medicine research projects.
  • Organize genomic data with other relevant data types into databases, displays, or graphic presentations for publication and web presentation.
Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, including fields, i.e., Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or Bioinformatics.

Experience: Two (2) years genomic research analysis experience in Windows and UNIX-based operating systems.

Master’s degree in a related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of experience.

The preferred candidate will have previous experience using ENCODE; ANNOVAR, GWAS RNA-seq data.
