Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Shared Resource at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) and University of Utah (http://huntsmancancer.org/bioinformatics ) is seeking a full-time Bioinformatics Data Analyst. This individual will join an established team of bioinformatic professionals to provide experiment design, data analysis, software development, compute infrastructure, and analysis training services to the research and clinical genomics communities at the HCI and University of Utah.

Responsibilities:

  • Analysis of data from high throughput sequencing experiments (RNASeq, ChIPSeq, BisSeq, Germline/Somatic variant detection, single cell genomics…)
  • Create, maintain, and document computer software workflows for data analysis and data management.
  • Assist researchers with the design of genomic experiments and grant writing.
  • Instruct personnel in in the use of genomic analysis tools.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s of Science degree with a focus on Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or Molecular Biology or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Two years of experience in genomic data analysis required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
  • Software development experience in object oriented programming using Java, Python, and or C++ and familiarity with molecular biology, genomics and some biostatistics helpful.
  • Master of Science degree or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science and/or Life Sciences preferred.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Preferences :
  • Masters of Science degree with a focus on Bioinformatics, Genomics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or equivalency.
  • One or more years of experience in next generation genomic data analysis.
  • Proven software development skills in a Linux environment using an object-oriented programming language such as Java.
  • Strong understanding of molecular biology, genomics, and biostatistics.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Independent problem solvers with a keen attention to detail. Team players who enjoy working in an open source academic community.
