Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Engineer will manage High Performance Computing Cluster for Genomic Analysis and HIPAA compliant environment reporting to UCLA Institute of Precision Health and DGIT team. This team designs, implements, operates and maintains the high-performance compute infrastructure that is tailor designed to address the substantial processing, networking and data moving challenges arising from genomic science. Utilizing the elasticity of the AWS Cloud and innovative Big Data technologies, the team is to develop highly optimized state-of-the-art bioinformatics solutions. Engineer with strong AWS, IaaS, Linux systems administration, HPC experience, who will be required to leverage their expertise to provide investigators and data scientist the computing environment they need to make an impact in medical care by advancing our understanding of the role of the human genome in disease. Responsbilities will include managin compute infrastructure and workload as focus and also contribute in the development of new bioinformatics software and genomic analysis pipelines.

The engineer will closely with a team of investigators, staff researchers and research computing IT in, but not limited to, the Clinical Exome Sequencing (CES) laboratory, Undiagnosed Disease Network (UDN) and Institute of Precision Health Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) under the direction of Dr. Stanley Nelson and Dr. Hane Lee to perform the following:

1. Managing on premise HPC cluster 2. translate scientific requirements into viable IT solutions.

3. working independently and collaboratively with rest of the team to gather requirements, prototyping, architecting, implementing, updating scientific pipelines; building and executing test plans, performing quality reviews

4. managing operations, and triaging and fixing operational issues.

5. Managing current on premise HPC Cluster and assisting the team in migrating HPC pipeline to AWS environment

6. Oversees and Analyze storage and resources needs as well as cost monitoring and optimization in the cloud

7. Assist Scientist for software purchase, installation and upgrade needs

Job Qualifications:

B.S. or higher in computer science or B.S. in computational biology / chemistry or a related field with appropriate job related IT experiences. 5+ years of experience of High performance cluster computing in on premise and AWS enviornment. The successful applicant must have programming skills: shell scripting, Python, R, C++ and Java. Hands-on Experience in deployment AWS CfnCluster, Batch, EMR is required. Understanding database and big data structure design and querying. Experience in deploying and maintaining tools/platform: Rstudio, Matlab, Zeppelin, Jupyter, iPython, Hadoop, Spark, Hive..etc is a plus. Experience in research, test, recommend, and place orders for new or alternative computing systems as enhancement to existing enviornment as needed and in consideration of budget constraints and cost/benefit analysis; design and set-up pre-production test environment for new systems. Ability in Investigate performance and process failures and work to improve them. Experience in providing consultation for faculty and staff on hardware and software solutions for their research and administrative needs, including design and maintenance of research-based computing systems and coordination with vendors of specialty computing systems required for specific projects. Experience in documentation and work with other members of the operations team to cross-train on project/system/AWS deployments. Ability to work with users with diverse technical experience and gather requirements and design solutions. Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution. Be part of an on-call rotation for after hours emergency response. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills will be needed in our collaborative and fast-paced team. Team Oriented/Player. Strong problem solving abilities. Self-learner.
