Job Description:
To engage active or recently graduated students with a practical work experience within an industry setting comprising individuals of diverse talents across the field of Bioinformatics, which includes computer science, statistics and genetics. Focus on implementing familiar skills while building experience in other skills possesed by team members is a priority. Engage in assisting completion of active projects within the group that may or may not be client-facing, including work on novel algorithms and their application to clinical trials. Provide exposure to client-facing interactions and effective communication of services provided by the group.

The training period would initially extend across the applicant’s scholastic semester, which could involve a full-time commitment if not interfering with curricula but could into the school year as a part-time commitment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Work on client-facing presentations and documentation explaining technological service offerings.

-Use skill set to assist in the development and/or testing of novel algorithmic solutions in fast-paced environment.

-Benchmark performance of internally developed tools with available commonly used tools.

-Participate in custom analysis work for both clients and the Translational Genomics laboratory

-Learn and apply state of the art bioinformatics and programming tools and methods for solving different problems, both internal and external

-Execute on individual projects while also contributing to larger team or project goals

-Present scientific presentations to the internal teams and / or academic settings/conferences.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

-Foundational knowledge in Linux/UNIX-based systems

-Knowledge of at least one of the following computing languages: Perl/Python, Shell scripting within Bash environment or similar general purpose programming languages, Experience with object-oriented programming and high performance programming(Java, C++) is a plus.

-Statistical programming: R (preferred), SAS,

-Data analysis with sequencing / microarray and other genomic technologies (N)

-Familiarity with SQL (N)

-Familiarity with coding test statements and working in SVN/Git repositories (N)

-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers and clients

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Enrollment in existing graduate-level program preferred, but enrollment in senior-level coursework from a qualified baccalaureate program is acceptable. Relevant coursework in one of the following fields: bioinformatics, genetics, computer science, biostatistics or genomics. Applicant must provide coding examples in their language of choice (if CS focused) or examples of analysis presentations they have performed/presented (non-CS).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

-Extensive use of keyboard requiring repetitive motion of fingers

-Regular sitting for extended periods of time
