Job Description:
We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious Bioinformatician to join a collaborative research project between Dr. Matthew Moscou’s group at TSL and Dr. Ksenia Krasileva’s group at UC Berkeley to identify genes in wheat that enhance resistance to wheat yellow rust. The candidate will be integrated in the Moscou group at TSL and maintain a close collaboration with UC Berkeley. The appointee will deploy state-of-the-art bioinformatic approaches to identify the causal genes in previously identified EMS-derived wheat mutants that increase resistance to wheat yellow rust. The main activity will be to develop methods that accelerate gene discovery. In addition, the successful candidate will be involved in coordinating with team members to initiate the functional characterisation of identified genes. We seek an individual with outstanding talent and abilities in bioinformatics. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of achievement, and an eagerness to work as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary, international team. The successful candidate has excellent writing skills and a talent for communication. Candidates would be advantaged by an understanding of high-throughput genomic analysis and familiarity with widely used genomic databases and methods. Competence with bioinformatic scripting languages, particularly Python and/or Perl, is essential, as is experience handling data from the Illumina platform or other high throughput sequence systems. The Sainsbury Laboratory is a world-class centre for plant/microbe interactions with a strong record in training and mentorship of early career scientists. The candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists with strong expertise in plant-pathogen interactions, molecular analyses, and bioinformatics. The post-holder will have opportunities to develop their technical and transferable skills during the duration of the appointment through training programmes, coaching, and mentoring. The candidate will be educated to PhD level or working towards completing a PhD.
