Job Description:
Under direction, design, develop, maintain, and administer bioinformatics infrastructure to integrate modern sequencing technology with VGL's existing workflow. Collaborate with VGL IT staff to write customized software and integrate new tools with VGL's existing software. Generate supporting documentation. Collaborate with and train staff and researchers on projects requiring extensive genetic analyses. Contribute to the writing of papers and grants.

Physical Demands:

Sit at a computer for extended periods of time. Occasionally lift/move up to 30 lbs. of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Educational background at the Bachelor's degree level in biology, molecular sciences, bioinformatics, or equivalent job experience or training.

-Working knowledge of Unix-based (e.g., Linux) and Windows operating systems.

-Proficiency with scripting in one or more of the following: R, Bash, Python.

-Experience working with a wide range of bioinformatics methods, tools, and databases.

-Experience with developing optimized pipelines for the alignment of high-throughput genomic sequencing data.

-Experience with evaluating and auditing bioinformatics utilities to produce required results and create efficient workflows.

-Experience with developing user-friendly workflows for scientists with little to no scripting experience and of providing training in command line manipulation of large genomic datasets.

-Experience with genotyping using short tandem repeat markers (STRs) and single nucleotide polymorphism markers (SNPs).

-Expertise using STRand software to analyze STR electropherograms in a high-throughput service laboratory.

-Familiarity with and understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.

-Strong project management skills to establish and carry out priorities, adapt to fluctuating workloads, and to utilize time effectively.

-Skill to keep accurate records.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Educational background at the Master's degree level in biology, molecular sciences, bioinformatics, or equivalent job experience or training.

-Demonstrated knowledge and application of genetics for diagnostics testing, parentage verification, and population-level genetic statistics in animals.

-Demonstrated knowledge of molecular genetics and laboratory skills applicable for DNA sequence analysis.

-Interpersonal and oral communication skills for working with other laboratory personnel and for presentation of work to peers, management, and the public.

-Oral and written skills to communicate technical issues and solutions clearly and concisely.

-Ability to use genomic databases, proteomic databases,and other bioinformatics tools.

-Ability to follow EH&S guidelines and laboratory protocols for safe handling of chemicals and biological materials.

-Thorough knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.

Work Environment:

Work with or be in areas where hazardous materials are present. Must be able to tolerate the occasional sight of blood and foul odors. Work is performed in a secured animal research facility. Care must be taken to conform to federal, state, and county regulations for safe handling and disposal of biological materials.

The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) is a self-supporting unit of the School of Veterinary Medicine. The Laboratory's DNA analytical services provide the basis for research and educational activities. The Laboratory's activities are grouped into five areas: Service, Administration, Informatics/Engineering, Forensics and Research.
