Job Description:
This position will provide programming and analytic support for a wide variety of bioinformatics and genomics research projects under the TEDDY study. Opportunities exist for proving support for other NIH-funded and privately funded type 1 diabetes research and disease prevention projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide broad-based programming and analytic support for a wide variety of bioinformatics and genomics research projects.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to design, develop, deploy and maintain open source software, scripts and automated pipelines facilitating the research and development process within the TEDDY research group.
  • Implement, design, maintain and document data analysis pipelines and workflows.
  • Develop code in the R and Python/Perl programming languages for the analysis and graphical representation of complex data.
  • Work with systems and solutions architects to coordinate development efforts throughout the data lifecycle.
  • Apply best practices to the design, development, implementation and maintenance of programs.
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of project design, implementation and other materials as needed.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training and two years of IT related work experience; or a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and three years of IT related work experience, OR a Master's degree and one year of IT related work experience, OR a combination of six years of IT related work experience and validated training. Preparation for a relevant IT certification is considered to be related training.

PREFERRED:

  • Two (2) years professional programming experience in Python, Perl, R (Bioconductor), SQL, Java, Bash or similar.
  • Comfortable developing scripts in a Linux environment, experienced in the Linux/UNIX set of tools (including advanced use of grep, awk, and sed) and adept at both adhoc scripting as well as collaboration utilizing a Version Control System (e.g. Git, Mercurial, or Subversion).
  • Comfortable developing, deploying, and debugging multi-step, automated pipelines utilizing Bash, Python, Perl and other open source software.
  • Experience in compiling and troubleshooting open source software.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the R and Python/Perl programming languages.
  • Experience working in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment including developing and deploying applications on Linux platforms, compiling open-source software, and troubleshooting HPC pipelines utilizing the SLURM scheduler.
  • Demonstrated experience in data lifecycle management, logical and physical data modeling, the systems development lifecycle and related concepts, object-oriented programming and design, Big Data concepts and their implementation.

  • Self-motivated and able to work and learn new technologies independently.
  • Proven critical-thinking skills and demonstrated ability to manage and interpret large biological data sets.
  • Team-oriented with excellent verbal and written communications skills to interact with both scientific personnel and IT professionals required.
