Job Description:
Tufts Medical Center's Ophthalmic Epidemiology and Genetics Service, seeks to identify an outstanding PhD Research Associate with skills in genetic-epidemiology and statistical genetic analyses, genetic database management, interpretation of next generation sequencing, exome/whole genome sequencing and genotyping arrays. This position provides the opportunity to work with large and unique datasets containing both epidemiologic and genetic databases, and for growth in the academic environment. Analyses involve cases and controls as well as families and meta-analyses of different datasets. The PhD Research Associate may also address new and emerging questions in the field of epigenetics, RNA sequencing, etc., provide support for genetic-epidemiologic, team-based research projects in the lab, and will present results at scientific meetings and write publications in peer reviewed journals.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Work with multi-disciplinary team of clinician scientists, molecular biologists and geneticists to conduct data analysis involving next generation sequencing and gene discovery, gene-environment and longitudinal data, and other related projects.
  • Develop and evaluate statistical/computational solutions to manage data
  • Interface and actively collaborate with other researchers, including external and academic partners
  • Write statistical genetic analyses sections of manuscripts and grants
Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Genetic-Epidemiology, Statistical Genetics, Computational Biology, or Bioinformatics
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with population-scale genetic-epidemiologic data analyses, software and websites, as well as computational programs such as Operating Systems (e.g. Unix, Linux, Windows); Scripting languages; Programming languages (Java, C++); statistical programming (R, MatLab, SAS); PLINK, other statistical genetics programs (GATK, annotation pipelines).
  • Ability to analyze large scale data i.e. whole exome datasets, etc. and have working knowledge of public databases- ExAC, 1,000 Genomes, etc.
  • Experience with multiple platforms-whole exome, Sanger sequencing, Chip genotyping, family based studies, association studies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Record of high quality publications and oral presentations preferable
  • Ability to write manuscripts for publication in top tier journals
  • Must have excellent English language skills-both verbal and written
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to manage, prioritize and steer research projects
  • Team player and willing to teach and share
  • Understanding of basic molecular biology helpful
  • Willing to commit 2 years minimum.
