Job Description:
The Computational Biologist will apply the tools of bioinformatics to accelerate traditional plant breeding, work together with a small creative team to design and conduct research, perform discovery and application work as well as potential supervision of technical staff. This role will also develop novel tools to assist in genome assembly, genomics, and genetics, assist in the management and maintenance of computational resources, including high performance computers and databases, plan and assure completion of complex projects involving cross-functional teams, and stay current with the newest molecular techniques that would aid Driscoll’s in accomplishing our mission.

Responsibilities:

Research: Assist in routine bioinformatics tasks. Maintain databases and tools needed to perform bioinformatics to support molecular plant breeding.

Supervision: Supervise technical staff to assist in the research efforts as needed. Support and promote safety. Develop, train, and evaluate performance of employees on a continuous basis.

Collaboration/Communication: Establish collaborative relationships with other researchers in the field through attendance of conferences and symposia. Occasional travel to locations in the European Union will be required.

General: Follow Company policies and practices while representing Driscoll’s in an ethical and business-like manner in all interactions with employees, governmental agencies, growers, customers, etc. Ensure the security of Driscoll’s confidential and proprietary information and materials. Qualifications:

Bachelors of Science in Biology, Agronomy or Horticulture or equivalent is required. A mas

  • Experience in bioinformatics (PhD or Master’s/Bachelor's degree with equivalent experience).
  • Individuals with experience outside of the plant sciences are also encouraged to apply.
  • Preferred Experience: Illumina, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms
  • Preferred Computer Experience:
    • Proficiency in R and Python programming. Java or web programming a plus
    • Linux command line tools, basic system monitoring and management
  • Has planned and executed complex projects with cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams.
  • Individual must possess the ability to develop strong trust in all working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation.
  • Some travel will be required.
  • A California driver’s license and the ability to be covered under company-sponsored vehicle insurance program are also required.
  • Passport and the ability to travel internationally without restrictions is also required.
