Boehringer Ingelheim is seeking a talented and innovative Director, Computational Biology to join our Ridgefield, CT Research team To provide experienced organizational, technological and scientific leadership in the application of cutting edge Computational Biology approaches to decision making on the NBE and NCE portfolio at BIPI. Overall responsibility for statistical and biological analysis and interpretation of internally produced and externally available bioinformatics data, such as expression data (NGS, Chip-platforms, GEO), siRNA screening, GWAS data, etc. As an employee of Boehringer Ingelheim, you will actively contribute to the discovery, development and delivery of our products to our patients and customers.   • Provide scientific, technical and organizational leadership for the Computational Biology group in support of BIPI therapeutic area goals for NBE and NCE productivity.
  • Establishment of a top quality, multidisciplinary Computational Biology group in Research with expertise in data mining, text mining, data analysis, data visualization, computer programming, computational biology with application to key therapeutic area projects. Educate colleagues in the application of cutting edge Computational Biology.
  • Identification, implementation and resourcing of new technologies and external collaborations in the field of Computational Biology in support of Research goals. Leadership of technology evaluation teams and management of external collaborators and CRO’s. Establish and implement an external investment strategy in Computational Biology that meets the overall strategic needs of BIPI Research.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary internal (e.g. TAM, RLT) and international (e.g. IRC, IRRM, RIX) meetings as appropriate. Influence the uptake of Computational Biology approaches across BI.
  • Recruit, retain and develop high quality staff. Ensure skills complementarity of recruited external talents with current staff. Manage performance of direct reports (initially 6-10, growing based on impact) and indirect reports.
  • Participation in interdisciplinary and/or international BI projects as requested by BIPI senior management. Partner with Development, Systems Biology and DDS to apply Computational Biology to tox and ADME.
  • Ensure compliance of Computational Biology staff with all required training, safety, regulatory, HR, laboratory notebook, and intellectual property activities and corporate policies.
  • Represent and promote high visibility of BI with outside organizations. Present at international scientific meetings and become established externally as a recognized leader in the field of Computational Biology. Support external publications in international journals.
Requirements
  • Requires PhD degree or equivalent Computational/Informatics experience/training with seven plus (7+) years of applied experience, including responsibility for managing team(s) focused on the application of Computational Biology to drug discovery, preferably in major pharma.
  • Requires ability to communicate effectively internally and externally.
  • More than six (6) years’ experience leading employees and projects
  • Requires the ability to lead and participate in interdisciplinary teams, both locally and across an organization.
  • Requires the ability to objectively evaluate and recommend new technology opportunities.
  • Requires experience in collaborating with external partners, including academic institutions and biotechnology companies. In addition to leading a scientific line, requires the ability to influence scientific direction and decision making across lines.
