Job Description:
The Laboratory Research Assistant-Bioinformatics (Position #221-2018) will assist Research Scientist(s) in carrying out experiments and projects related to developing and improving systems for plants and other biotechnology. The Research Assistant will work to expand upon current skills & knowledge in areas that may include bioinformatics, coding, computer programming, data analysis, molecular biology, and microbiology.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Modifies, refines, adapts, or develops laboratory techniques and analytical procedures to meet specific experimental needs in the biology-related research areas as assigned;
  • Participates in experiments in various settings: laboratory, greenhouse, and field;
  • Performs data analysis / bioinformatics related to genomic sequencing;
  • Utilizes coding to develop precision agriculture-related robotics and autonomous platforms;
  • Operates highly specialized laboratory instruments;
  • Troubleshoots technical problems under the guidance of immediate supervisor;
  • Carries out necessary project analyses;
  • Records and analyzes experimental data.
  • Maintains each work area/space as required by safety standards and lab protocol;
  • Remains current with recent literature in the area of assigned research;
  • Operates in a culture of safety in carrying out laboratory assignments, including the proper handling/storage of chemicals;
  • Reviews, follows, and may assist in the development of all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that apply to assigned duties and projects;
  • Works collaboratively within a diverse research group.
Preferred Skills:
  • Bachelor of Science in a biological discipline, or related field, is required.
  • Computer science and coding experience is required.
  • Familiarity with basic microbiology practices such as sterile technique and culture preparation, running assays, and centrifuge operation is desired.
  • Excellent communication, organization, computer, and record keeping skills are highly desired.
  • Ability to work productively, independently, and cooperatively with other team members is required
Hours: IALR hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Work hours outside of normal IALR operating hours may be required and is based on business needs.
