A postgraduate research opportunity is available at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), in the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products. This project is a multi-disciplinary team effort to build a machine learning framework that uses clinical trial data to: 1) predict clinical outcomes such as survival analysis via patient cohort data, 2) perform patient selection based on clinical features to predict treatment response, and 3) enable patient cohort categorization by clinical outcome predictions. The collaboration will provide critical information to FDA/CDER, regarding the practical application of next-generation sequencing(NGS) from tissue acquisition to patient outcome.

Under the guidance of a mentor the participant may be involved in: performing genomic and tumor whole exome sequencing on patients being treated with immunotherapy to evaluate risk of AE development; performing whole exome sequencing of plasma of 20 patients to determine frequency of germline mutations affecting HR pathway; examining various SOPs and protocols to understand best-in-practice approach to sample acquisition and preparation for (NGS); and examining various informatics approaches to understand best-in-practice approach to NGS analytics and novel methodologies.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for 12 months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is part-time (24 hours per week) at FDA in the Silver Spring, MD area. Participants do not become employees of FDA or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
