Job Description:
The scientific question: In biotherapeutic drug development antibodies have to fulfill multiple specific properties. To efficiently employ new next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques into the discovery pipelines most of these properties have to be determined by in silico methods just based on the antibody sequence. Your work will tackle novel prediction algorithms for specific antibody features to optimize their development process. You will start to mine existing in-house data by the use of appropriate technologies like machine learning, statistics, bioinformatic sequence- and structural tools (in-house available) and you are free to combine different tools and develop new algorithms. In a second project phase new and focused sequence data will be generated in-house specifically for your project as proof-of-concept for your new algorithm(s) and to support the statistical significance. You will also be welcomed to contribute to the rationale and design of this wet lab work, based on the results of the initial data mining phase.

As your work will strongly influence antibody drug development and support ground-breaking paradigm shifts we expect it to be very rewarding and support its publication. You will work in the environment of two key departments within Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED): (1) Large Molecule Research is responsible for the generation of new antibody based drug candidates and (2) pRED informatics is your host for the in silico analyses, modelling and algorithm/tool development. You will thus work in and be supported by a network of in-house experts and drive drug development to help millions of patients.

Roche Pharma Research and Early Development is looking for a candidate with solid bioinformatics background to solve a challenging scientific task.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

  • You will work as a bioinformatics researcher (m/f) within Roche Pharma Research, developing algorithms for antibody binding properties prediction. Furthermore you will get the unique opportunity to validate your findings by guiding wet-lab experiments.
  • Other key responsibilities comprise the development of data analysis and prediction algorithms on antibody NGS data by the application of appropriate e.g. machine learning techniques
  • Developing automated analysis pipelines to solve challenging antibody drug development tasks with NGS data will be the ultimate goal
  • It will be your responsibility to cooperate both with wet lab scientists and data scientists to design experiments, generate and analyze antibody NGS data
  • The publication of results belongs to your tasks and will be supported
Who you are:
  • You're someone who wants to influence your own development. You're looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies. Where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point.
  • You hold a PhD in bioinformatics or a related relevant field
  • In addition, you have excellent programming skills with knowledge of at least one of the following programming languages: Java, R, C++ or similar
  • You are experienced in working with next generation sequencing data, favorably antibody datasets
  • We can trust in your experience with statistics, machine learning, clustering and/or data mining algorithms
  • Your knowledge on bioinformatics data integration and large-scale data analysis is up-to-date
  • You have a solid background in protein biology, especially antibody biology
  • Basic knowledge of protein structure is important and antibody modeling experience is of advantage
  • You are able to perform standard wet-lab experiments with guidance and you are eager to learn new techniques
  • You can prove your scientific excellence with a number of publications
  • You are well known for your strong team spirit and your willingness to work in international teams
  • In addition you are interested to work interdisciplinary and you are ready to learn and explore new fields
  • Excellent English skills, written and spoken, complete your profile
  • This position is limited to a timeframe of two years.
