Job Description:
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine Inc. (HJF) is seeking a Programmer Analyst for the HIV Research Program (MHRP) located in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP.

The Programmer/Analyst will work with computational biologists and researchers to create and enhance applications to facilitate the collection, processing, analysis and sharing of laboratory and clinical data.

Responsibilities:

1. Use a variety of technologies, including scripting languages, proprietary and open source software development tools and various data management platforms to create applications, utilities and integrations to help automate research data processing and analysis.

2. Design and implement computational analyses.

3. Develop, evaluate and make publicly available computer code following principles of reproducible research.

4. Develop and support applications for aggregating, managing, analyzing and sharing laboratory and clinical research data obtained from various sources. Work with data analysts and Information Technology (IT) personnel to determine and design the best technical solutions for automating the aggregation and management of research data from disparate sources. Build analytical workflows for automated deployment of bioinformatics tools for high-throughput data analysis and interpretation of large data sets.

5. Contribute to the science through independent and collaborative research including co-authoring papers and protocols.

6. Maintain current knowledge of and contribute to advancements in the field through participation in professional organizations, scientific conferences, reading industry journals, and publication of manuscripts.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong analytical and problem solving skills and the desire to learn new technologies. Good development skills with one or more web client technologies, e.g. NodeJS, JSP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, jQuery, and ExtJS. Knowledge of R is a plus. Experience with high performance computing such as Sun GridEngine or other Linux cluster environment or cloud computing systems. Excellent communications skills and the ability to work effectively in the scientific research domain.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:

Bachelors degree required, Masters Degree preferred in Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or related discipline. Interest in biology (eg infectious diseases, evolution, and genetics) a plus.

Minimum Experience: 4 - 6 years experience

Physical Capabilities: Ability to communicate verbally, write and prepare documents and travel to and move within HJF program research sites.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Incumbent will be under the supervision of MHRP’s head biostatistician.

Work Environment: General office environment within research laboratory.
